104.9 FM NOW HAS MORE X >>>

If you tune into the Funky Monkey 104.9FM you will not hear any monkey noises. As of today, the local neu-rock radio station went off the air. In its place is GenX 104.9FM. A Funky Monkey wake will reportedly be held tonight starting at 8 p.m. inside Hell's Kitchen. The vibe will be funky, to say the least.

The following was posted today on the GenX's website:

To Our Monkey Nation

The time has come to say goodbye and thank you to all of our loyal fans.  For the last 11 years you have tuned in to our little station while we brought new rock music to the south sound. We have had the pleasure of meeting many of you at our events and love hearing the stories of how The Monkey has been the sound track for your lives. There is nothing like making someone's dreams come true and introducing them to their favorite rock star.  Those are the memories we'll take with us forever.  Thank you for the support you've shown us by coming out to our events and supporting our causes like Rock For Racks.  It was widely known that Monkey listeners are the most passionate radio listeners out there, and for your endless enthusiasm, we thank you. We lasted a LONG TIME with some mega-massive and mega-awesome rock radio stations around us in this great city, and for 11 years we bit at their ankles & had a blast. We will never forget how fortunate we were to have been a part of The Monkey.  So for now, lock up your monkey shirts, hats, & stickers because they're officially collectors items! Thanks again for being the best listeners in the world! Think of us fondly and please keep local music alive and in your hearts.

To put it simply: WE'LL DO IT LIVE! Now, say it with us if you will...

Be safe, be dangerous --- but most importantly ... and always: rock onwards, and continuously. Thank you

I will always have memories of the Funky Monkey, because of the permission granted to Puget Sounds TV to tape at the haunted house in fife a few years ago. Every Halloween we will remember. Thanks.

Funky Monkey Triva:
Buzzard's Discs was the the very first advertiser.
It was also the debut of the now legendary "Best Racks in Town" radio ad.

Very sad to hear it go.

What a disappointment today, driving home from work looking forward to the monkey & hearing some other crap on 104.9. I thought maybe it was a prank? Thanks Funky Monkey for a great ride. The Funky Monkey will be sorely missed.

How does someone just up and decide this with no warning?
I was an avid listener back in middle school and high school... I did the funkey monkey haunted houses and all... but why did you make this choice just out of the blue?
All my frenns are texting me telling me about this, and they all said it was random.
Did. You announce it on air?
It's a shame.
I hope the reason for this dramatic change is worth it.
As you said, to some people that monkey was their lives....a few people I know this is very true...
I get the thank yous, and the shout outs... but if this station, this group of people behind the Mic, and all these local bands have made dreams come true, and just have made life so incredibley worth living, why would you cut it off??
Why not find a replacement?

Where did the monkey go ? Is he coming back? That was the only station I listened to on my hour drive to work and on my hour drive home Justin you were great you made the long drives home not so bad I think it is owed to all the loyal listeners out there a reason or even an apologies it was so unexpected! and now it's gonna be more dangerous driving while having to flip through the stations hoping and praying the monkey just moved to a different station I HATE the new station I'm not going to listen to 104.9 if the monkey isn't on it well either am I !

I so bummed the Monkey's off the air! It was the only station that played decent stuff AND made me laugh. I tuned in yesterday and heard some pop garbage and had to double check my radio to make sure I actually had the right station. What a sad thing for the SS : (

Totally disappointed! We have enough stations that play the "Gen X" format. If I want to hear that sh*t I will tune into 101.5, 106.1, 96.5, 93.3, 92.5. Save the apologies and goodbyes, and just BRING IT BACK!
I'd say whoever decided on this new format would qualify as "The Idiot of the Day"

I still remember the very first time I found Funky Monkey. I was flipping stations in my car and tuned in just in time to hear the trademark monkey cry. My then 3 year old said he wanted "that station". We were immediately hooked, and for the last 11 years, the Monkey has been both of our favorite stations. (Okay, call me a bad parent for letting a child listen to Funky Monkey, but he's turned out just fine.) When I turned on the radio after work on Wednesday, I thought I had the wrong station. When I realized I didn't, I couldn't believe that the Monkey was playing the song that was on. I too thought it was a joke or maybe special (awful) programming because Justin was off for the holiday. When I realized that it was a whole new station with a totally different format, I coundn't believe it. Okay, so I'm technically a genx-er (the oldest of the bunch having been born in 1965), but the music they're playing now is mostly crap. I can't imagine even one Monkey listener continuing on with this new station. They've just lost a huge demographic of all ages from all walks of life. Why, why, whyyyyyy?! There's no station that even comes close to filling the gap.

?? What do you mean the Monkey is gone ?? I remember when the monkey first started, I couldn't believe the $hit they were getting away with, and they play kick a$$ music. I was sad to lose Rasin Radio but Justin filled in because they still played kick a$$ music. I can't believe the Funky Monkey is gone. I feel like one of my best friends just died, and I'm never going to hear from them again.

Seriously, 104.9 now plays the same "soft rock" that you hear all over the rest of the radio. The ONE high light of driving through Tacoma.

But I guess it's easily deleted from my radio stations. Damn and it was the only music station I listened to. Everything else I listen to is from burned CD's.

I'm probably older than quite a few other listeners but I definitely prefer The Monkey to Generation X whatever the hell it is. There are already PLENTY of stations that play culled-for-sanitation 90s playlists. But there was NOTHING like The Monkey. I didn't like everything on there, but when I was in a mood to really rock and was tired of the mild stuff, I could always count on good old 104.9. That's it. I'm buying a damn satellite radio. Maybe I'll have a better selection then.

User Photo

brad said on Nov. 15, 2010 at 6:00pm

The monkey went off air at 12:00pm? Oh! So that's why I heard cool music
on 104.9 on my way to work that day and heard crap on that station on my way
home from work that day. Mystery solved.

Life has changed as we've known it! I'm not sure how I'm gonna make it threw life with no fuckin Funky Monkey music, or without always learning the name and artist of every song after it plays, one of the monkey's coolest attributes. Leave it to the dumbass, corporate investors to destroy such an awesome entity we all loved! I say ADMIT YOUR MISTAKES, AND BRING BACK THE MONKEY, you fucksticks!

What about Funky Monkey draws in that particular type of dude as a fan? You, know, slightly beat-up truck with Funky Monkey sticker and truck nutz swinging from the hitch? “I pay for groceries with food stamps, but my full-sleave tattoos I pay for with cash?” Got kicked out of the Kamel Toe in Spanaway ‘cause someone talked smack to their cousin? Hangs out with cousins? You know what kind of dude/chick I’m talking about?

Funky Monkey just didn't draw a big enough audience. It had been that way for a long time, and there finally had to be a breaking point. Part of the problem is the station (104.9)'s signal strength. It can't reach enough people for a niche product like that to be successful--which is why a product like GenX 104.9 is a much safer bet.

I started listening to Monkey 11 years ago (I know I am aging myself) when it first was born. Even back then when it only played a few select songs (at night, mind you) on a CD with no DJ, it was one of the best radio spots on the air. I watched it evolve to the masterpiece it became with the induction of more air time, MORE great music and DJ's (remember Raizin). The Monkey was what a radio station should be...a place to listen to GREAT music with no BS. It's sad to to tune into 104.9 and not hear my music and have music from my past streaming through the airwaves. PLEASE BRING THE MONKEY BACK!!!!!!

KISW is OK, not great, but it doesn't come close to the Monkey. When ZROCK got taken off, I was bummed. When The Monkey came on it was as if the Metal Gods realized we need a good hard rock and metal playing station. . . . .those gods have left us = (

User Photo

Awwww man, this was the only station I really listened to for the last few years. They were the only station in the area (that I knew of) that bothered to put up some real metal like Metallica, All That Remains and Bullet For My Valentine. Everyone else puts up more older rock and occasionally some metal but nothin like Funky Monkey.

I'll miss these guys, I really will. I'll miss Idiot of the Day and Justin.

R.I.P. 104.9 Funky Monkey!

Clear Channel quote; "The format was changed due to sagging ratings" The ratings never once "sagged" while the Monkey was privately owned. Clear Channel you purchased a successful format and managed to ruin another unique and popular station with your "we know all about radio" attitude. The Monkey was a wildly popular station that you bought it to eliminate the competition. Your best move would have been to let the people run it that had control when you bought it and just take the profits. Instead you shot yourself in the foot.

User Photo

Erica said on Aug. 10, 2011 at 10:47pm

I just wanna say I am so angry. This was by far the best station in the Seattle area. Now we ONLY have 99.9. This station was what the "End" used to be in the 90s. AWESOME. It was annoying when 107.7 went lame but I found the monkey. I have really missed decent music on the radio and am so thankful for technology. Don't we have enough stations around here playing the crap you're playing now? Maybe ratings could of improved if you tried improving signal??? I know I lost the station every time I went barely outside of the city (Everett gets a canadian station on 104.9)But no lets make another 101.5 how sad.
