Fakt: Artifakt brings out the night owls

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: 8 P.M. IS TOO EARLY >>>

Artifakt-peace Artifakt Multi Genre Art Party started on Tacoma time, that is to say that although The Robert Daniel Gallery opened at 8 p.m., the space didn't get shoulder-to-shoulder full until about 10:30. But it got there.

Matt Eklund, the South Sound faceman for the Seattle-based arts group and a local musician, artist in his own right, seemed a bit nervous as the clocked ticked away those first minutes after the converted warehouse turned gallery opened for art watchers.

He was in a much happier mood as the night progressed as the stead stream of men in button-down shirts and jeans and women in skirts of varying lengths â€" mostly short â€" filed in after dropping their dollars down.

Artifakt-hall Artifakt-dance What the crowd saw was some expressive art from nine artistic visionaries that ranged in styles from cartoon dragons to Japanese-inspired nature scenes with an edge as Seattle’s DJ Eva and Tacoma’s DJ Spice and Flat Black spiked the vibe with techno-dance chirps.Artifakt-outside Artifakt-dudes Artifakt-Angie Artifakt-couple Artifakt-Daniel Artifakt-DJ

SOTA: Going new school

MARK THOMAS DEMING: SENIORS STAGE ARTISTS IN THE ROUND >>>

SOTA-one Kids these days.

What’s the world coming to?

Used to be that on your last day of high school you went to a party, got drunk and did stupid things. Then you spent the next year, or two years, or four years, or (as in my case) several years, getting drunk and doing stupid things. Then you got a job.

But Natalie Archer and Kaitlyn Lloyd, who graduate from SOTA Monday, decided to stage Round 6 of the Tacoma Artists in the Round series instead. Taking place at Urban Grace Church, the show featured seven SOTA songwriters and musicians, artist Jovita Austin and slam poet Gwendolyn Faye. Oh yeah, and The Nightgowns.

The Nightgowns!

SOTA-3 It was a sobering experience, I tell you.

I found myself wishing I’d been a kid like these SOTA kids. I wished I’d been that smart and talented when I was a teen. I wished I’d gone to SOTA. I wished there’d been a SOTA.

I wished The Nightgowns had headlined my senior party.

The show was not without problems. The lighting was bad. Gwendolyn Faye was good, but the 40-something poet didn’t fit with the other performers. Also, it was hard to appreciate the superb technique of Austin, who was perched in an overhead baptismal fount like Juliette on her balcony.

SOTA-two After the round, I watched about half of The Nightgown’s expectedly solid set. Then, feeling like the old guy, I left the kids to their fun and bright futures.

Do they still do yearbooks?

Stay cool. You’re awesome. Don’t ever change.

5 Things To Do: Sunday

MICHAEL SWAN: SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2009 >>>

Punk-Rock-Baseball 1. After Punk Rock Baseball this afternoon there's a Punk Rock Baseball Benefit Show with I Defy, Dem Zaing and McMonster the Devastator at Hell's Kitchen around 7 p.m.

2. Eakins and Dombrosky are installation/conceptual artists. Their work tends to be more experiential and thought provoking than visual, yet some of the works in Phantasm Chasm at Fulcrum Gallery â€" noon to 6 p.m. â€" are visually intriguing, and some are downright beautiful to look at.

3. Marilyn Frasca’s show at Childhood’s End Gallery is one of the better shows they’ve had in a long time. Her drawings are wonderful. Check them out from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

4. Culling The Weak, Triosis, Witness The Massacre, Aspen, We Move Mountains, One Last Vengeance and Chasing Aurora play an all-ages show at The Viaduct at 6 p.m.

5. The Crossroads Band lays down some blues at 7 p.m. at The Spar in Old Town Tacoma.
