Leap of the Day The Red Hot

Jumping-Bandito-One We have our moments every December when we wish the Grinch would just go ahead and steal the holiday, leaving us to enjoy the final month of the year for its simpler pleasures: crisp weather, bright moons, butternut squash. But, like the Grinch, our cold hearts eventually warm every December when we catch of glimpse of Bandito Betty Lou Who â" the leaping holiday minx who spreads cheers and good will â" three feet above the ground â" throughout Tacoma.

Ensure against your bah humbugs early this year by joining us daily on Spew for Bandito Betty Lou Who's "Leap of the Day." We have gone to great lengths to capture her daily leaps (we paid Steph DeRosa to stalk her).

What a gift. Twenty-four days of leaps. You are so welcome.

Feel free to rate her jumps or provide captions in the comments sections.

Taste the holiday spirit

The holidays. Love ’em or loathe ’em, they’re here, complete with fudge, stuffed mushrooms, plump guys in red suits and parties! Pot luck, probably. Bobble Tiki already juggles a stack of invites and might even volunteer (or, more likely, be volunteered) to throw a bash too. And now that good ol’ Aunt Ho has retired to Florida and taken up windsurfing, Bobble Tiki can’t count on the fam to prepare the holiday candy.

Therefore, Bobble Tiki has to head to school.

Tomorrow Bayview School of Cooking hosts Olympian chocolatier Bruce Tegarden, owner of Fine Art Chocolates, who will teach the fundamentals of chocolate, its properties, varieties and tempering process.

Taste Tegarden’s sweet success with a sampling of port, too.

[Bayview Thriftway, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 6-8:30 p.m., $40, 516 Fourth Ave. W., Olympia, 360.352.4901]

Batshit crazy in Tacoma

Bald-crazy-britney For all of you out there who love starring at gruesome automobile accidents hoping to spot blood or a severed limb, the biggest human train-wreck of the last 10 years â€" Britney Spears â€" will be playing the Tacoma Dome early next year. We just received the news here at Weekly Volcano World Headquarters that "The Circus Starring Britney Spears" (apparently this is what the great Starbuck's guzzling minds behind Spears have decided to call her first tour in 5 years â€" naming it after the queen of pop drama's new record) will be hitting town on Thursday, April 9. The $35 to $96 tickets will go on sale through Ticketmaster this Saturday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. The Pussycat Dolls will open.

Something tells me Suzy Stump is already in line.

This calls for a photo montage.

Toilet Tales: Kyoto

Toilet-Tales-Kyoto Last week Mr. DeRosa and I decided to escape on a mini-Thanksgiving vacation to Las Vegas.  We wouldn’t be attending the family dinner here in Tacoma, but I naturally felt a yearning to anticipate the family’s Thanksgiving needs while I was gone.  We have a friend who raises organic, local, free-range turkeys just for fun.  She offered to butcher one and sell it to us at an extremely low price.  Hell yeah!  Who wouldn’t want this?  I immediately called the family member who was supposed to be hosting the dinner and offered her this amazing deal.  She is a huge health-freak, and I was sure she would jump on such a great idea.  I didn’t have to do this, right?  I wasn’t even going to be here. But I tend to always think of other people and what they might need or what would make them happy.

The family member declined the turkey offer claiming she’d “rather buy a frozen one at the store.”  Wow.  Just, wow.  Seriously?

I thought about family drama and taking care of my own crap while in the bathroom at Kyoto Japanese Restaurant in Lakewood. Check out my thoughts on the Weekly Volcano Web site.

Where restaurants shop

Fife just doesn’t have enough large trucks moving through its streets. It needs another massive steel building at, say, where 12th Street East and 62nd Avenue East meet.

Enter Restaurant Depot. The restaurant wholesaler with around 60 stores in the United States is seeking bids from contractors to erect a new location in Fife.

Restaurant Depot provides restaurants with bulk and industrial food items, such as 87-pound wheels of Parmesan cheese, 160-quart stock pots and 5-gallon buckets of pickles. Chef’s Quality frozen cakes will be that much closer once the building is finished, too.

Membership will be free â€" for restaurants. It’s not open to the public.
