Women's flat track roller derby in Tacoma is cruising on all cylinders as the Dockyard Derby Dames launch into their sixth season of hot roller derby action.

This sport involves - roughly - a race between two teams on roller skates, during which a player scores points by overtaking opposing players after skating completely around the track within a certain time limit. Despite its roots in Depression-era entertainment, the derby has undergone several cycles, including an upswing in the '70s, and now has grown to 130 Women's Flat Track Derby Association leagues, which the Dockyard Derby Dames became a member in 2010.

Founded in 2006, the Dockyard Derby Dames is composed of more than 80 women who range in age from 21 to 53.

The Weekly Volcano is sponsoring one of the audience grandstands, which we have dubbed the Hot Spot. Be sure to sit in our section during the bouts. We'll be tossing crap into the crowd.

Dockyard Derby Dames Season 6

• BOUT 1: UPDATE: Pierce College canceled the event due to power outage issues. Saturday, Jan. 21, Pierce College Health Ed. Center, 9401 Farwest Dr. SW, Lakewood, doors at 5 p.m. The double header starts off with the Marauding Mollys battling Season 5 champions The Trampires, followed by the Hellbound Homewreckers taking on the Femme Fianna. Tickets are $12 in advance at Brown Paper Tickets or $15 at the door. Tickets are $10 for ages 6-12 or with a military ID. Kids age 5 and younger are free. A portion of proceeds from this event benefit Coffee Strong.
• BOUT 2: Saturday March 31, Pierce College Health Ed. Center, 9401 Farwest Dr. SW, Lakewood, doors at 5 p.m. The double header starts off with Femme Fianna vs. Trampires, followed by the Hellbound Homewreckers vs. Marauding Mollys.
