The music of U2 has been like a fly buzzing around my ear for 30 years. It's difficult for me to remember a time when it wasn't there, ingrained in my consciousness, though not always at the forefront. It has acted, in some ways, as a guide, in others, as a barometer; but most often, it has been an inspiration, a tangible representation of the rather ingenuous fantasy I've clung to these many years - that rock music can somehow exult us, can strengthen us, can remind us of our capacity for dignity and our potential for grace.
All of this - a slipshod metaphysics of rock - spawned by an Irish foursome who, when they formed, could hardly play their instruments and possessed between them nothing more than the naive belief that they could create something lasting, something meaningful, something their own.
Do you feel the same about U2?
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of - in my opinion - the band's greatest record, Achtung Baby, Team U2 has invited the public to help design to reinvent the album cover's famous collage, incorporting images from today's global environment. If you're one of 15 finalists, you'll receive a bunch of awesome U2-ness, as well a car!
You in? Check out the detail below.
