Something's in the air. The days are getting longer. The weather's getting warmer. And it's taking less and less to entertain you all the time.
That's right, it's the start of the summer movie season! The critical darlings that got you through the winter months are a thing of the past, replaced by CGI-packed blockbusters loaded with superheroes like Thor, the X-Men, Green Lantern and Captain America - movies all designed principally as a way of tempting you into an air-conditioned theater to spend money on popcorn, Dots and nachos.
Now that's a marketing ploy the Weekly Volcano can get behind!
Thursday, July 28, the Weekly Volcano presents its annual Best of Tacoma issue - this year buffed to the max in a unitard. That's right, Super Friends! After suffering the bite of a rare radioactive spider, this year's Best of Tacoma issue has been miraculously transformed into the Super Best of Tacoma issue!
Here at the Weekly Volcano we spent the past 12 months dining, drinking, rockin' out, sneaking around city hall and shopping our way across Tacoma, Puyallup, Lakewood, Gig Harbor and the other Pierce County cities - wearing a cape and awkward codpiece the whole time. We've viewed the past year through a funny-looking mask. Now we are ready to punch you in the face with what we discovered July 28!
Of course, the Volcano's Super Best of Tacoma Readers' Poll will be the magic potion that drives the Super Best of Tacoma 2011. Think you know the best restaurant, politician, hero or thrift store? Want to help spread the word about the best bike shop, hair salon or bar in Pierce County? Cast your vote here. The results of our super survey will be published in the Weekly Volcano Super Best of Tacoma issue July 28, 2011.
THE PRIZE!
All ballots must be received by Thursday, June 30 at 5 p.m. Those that arrive before the deadline will be eligible to win a $200 gift certificate to Pacific Grill restaurant and a night at the Hotel Murano. The winning ballot will be chosen at random.
The Super Best of Tacoma 2011 is sponsored by the Midtown Lofts.
OK, enough blabbering. Cast your vote:

Thanks for participating Todd. It's at least 100 questions less than past years. Editor Matt cut my suggestion: Best place to sip soup and listen to vinyl between a pool hall and a comedy club?

Whew! I used to feel like I had been at least decently immersed in Tacoma life, but now I feel like a moron! A "Save & Continue Later" button is a must for future years of the Superbest.

What?! No Best Seafood? We're in the Pacific Northwest! We just had an exceptional dinner at Sakura's Japanese Steakhouse full of Seafood - Lobster, Scallops and Shrimp melted in our mouths! Although, I'm sure their steak is good too!

Wine Bank has many different kinds of wine from all over the world, something for everyone. Bob and Linda are great hosts and are very knowledgeable about wine. I have been going to the Wine Bank for the last three years now and the Wine bank is the only place I buy my wine.

Wine Bank in University Place is the best wine shop going. Big enough to have a great selection, small enough for personal attention. The guys know wine, are very helpful and are just fun to hang around.
Shogun Japanese Express in U.P. gives you the food quality of true Teppan without the sky high prices. Fabulous little Mom & Pop place where the owners will remember your name.

The Wine Bank in University Place has a wonderful selection of wines in all price ranges. The wine-tastings with munchies are fun. Bob, Bob and Linda are friendly and give personal service, ordering wine if it is not in stock.

To quote The Frenchman..."Tacoma: Love it or Leave it." I'm a proud resident since 1999. Love the variety and the familiarity. Big enough so I don't get bored. Small enough so I don't get lost.

The best darned burger in town has to be the Thrill of the Grill on Tacoma Ave and 14th. It has such a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and their burgers are the best I have EVER had. All I can say is that if you are in Tacoma and want to taste the best burger you can get, go here!
