Director George C. Wolfe and his team have re-created a gorgeous period-piece look for this Oscar-worthy adaptation of August Wilson's play set in 1920s Chicago. Unforgettably powerful Viola Davis carries the day as Ma, a thunderstorm of unique vocal talent and next-level diva behavior, and Chadwick Boseman's work as the braggadocious trumpeter named Levee stands on its own as the best of the actor's career. Available on Netflix Dec. 18. - Four stars
