Tacoma's Main Library opened in 1903. It was the first Carnegie Library built in Washington state. It houses art exhibitions, lectures, author visits, and more — as well as home to more than 250,000 books, magazines, compact discs, and videos.

The Northwest Room and Special Collections on the second floor houses information about Tacoma and the region. The collection includes a wealth of unique databases, hundreds of thousands of photographs, genealogical records and much more.
