Tom and Gerri (Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen) are long and happily married. Their frequent visitor is Mary (Lesley Manville), an unhappy woman with a drinking problem who needs shoring up with their sanity. Mike Leigh's new film is one of his best, placing as he often does recognizable types with embarrassing comic and/or dramatic dilemmas. One of the year's best films. - Four stars
