From March 17-April 4, the Weekly Volcano's Tournament of Pizza was in high gear, starting with a packed and delicious field of 64 area pizza joints, and slowly but surely whittled it down through daily, heated competitions on our blog, Spew. The pizza places in the field of 64 were selected and seeded by readers, who, you guessed it, voted throughout February.
It was all in the model of March Madness, of course - only far tastier and with a lot more pepperoni.
Much like the NCAA men's basketball tournament, our Tournament of Pizza (Trademark, yo!) was full of buzzer beaters, shocking upsets and Cinderella stories leading up to the official Tournament of Pizza Party April 4 at The Schooner in Lakewood and the announcement of the champion of all South Sound pizza joints during halftime of the NCAA championship game.

DAY 1
Tournament of Pizza opens with The Cloverleaf Pizza facing Papa Johns, Ale House Sports Pub versus Joeseppi's, Delbrocco's battling Mon Pizza and Pasta and Pizza Casa taking on Cerello's Pizza. HOW IT PLAYED OUT

Clash of the Downtown Tacoma Regional Titans including Upper Crust Bistro vs. Adriatic Grill! Plus day three results in which Spud's Pizza Parlor annihilates Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake. HOW IT PLAYED OUT

Day 4 results including Primo Grill's hard fought, nail biting 50.9 percent victory over The New Frontier Lounge. Plus the west-side war including The Tides Tavern versus Terry's Office Tavern. HOW IT PLAYED OUT

South regional strife including Oldschool Pizzeria vs. Chuck E. Cheese. Plus the importance of cheese in Fondi Pizzeria's 70 percent victory over Nick-N-Willy's Pizza in day 5. HOW IT PLAYED OUT

Dirty Dave's Pizza Parlor's blitzkrieg against al Forno Ferruzza, other day six results and Big Wheel Steakhouse vs. Powerhouse Restaurant & Brewery. HOW IT PLAYED OUT

Last day of Round 1! The neck and neck race between Aversano's and Big Nick's Pizza & Pasta, and the last chance to make it into round two. GET CAUGHT UP ON ROUND 1
Launching into the next round:

Second Round baby! Battles heats up in the last day of Round 1 with Katie Downs nearly shameful victory over Alfred's Cafe & Bubble Room. And Round Two hostilities kick off with analyst favorite Cloverleaf Pizza taking on Joeseppi's Italian Ristorante.HOW IT PLAYED OUT

DAY 16
Drum roll please. Your 2011 Final Four are: The Fan Club, Apollo's Pizza, Katie Downs, and Apollo's pizza. HOW IT PLAYED OUT
DAY 17
Championship Game!!! Nearly 7,000 people voted to see their favorite into the FINAL. Katie Downs against Apollo Pizza and Pasta. There can only be one victor, and the other will have to go home with their pepperoni between their legs. HOW IT PLAYED OUT
DAY 18
A champion is crowned. Free pizza, basketball, and a really sweet ballot box marked the evening. Curious who won? I bet you are.
