For 2010, Rick King is the Weekly Volcano’s honorary Best Tacoman. It’s well deserved.
The Weekly Volcano has spent the past 12 months dining, drinking, rockin' out, sneaking around city hall, and shopping our way across Tacoma, Puyallup, Lakewood, Gig Harbor and the other Pierce County cities - all while wearing 3-D glasses. That's right, we have viewed the past year through funny-looking glasses.
The Best of Tacoma 2010 is in spectacular 3-D.
That's right - Hollywood has arrived in the greater Tacoma area, spinning off bits of Avatar-style, virtual reality technology. The same brand of special effects that produced the billion-dollar blockbuster movie has been used by architects and engineers to design the Weekly Volcano's Best of Tacoma 2010 issue.
As always, we asked you to vote for Tacoma's best people, places and things, and did you ever respond. This year we had twice as many people vote as last year. Good job, people! However, we can't always rely on our readers for the most interesting choices. A Readers' Poll of just Vicci Martinez, Metropolitan Market and Point Defiance Park doesn't cut it. We're glad to oblige in the form of our own staff picks.
Of course, we learn plenty from our readers. Best Food On The Go? "Beer, through a straw," quipped one. Best Worst Band? "Any rock band from Spanaway" bellowed one ballot entry. Best Tattoo Shop?? "No such place, tattoos are for loosers (sic)," someone informed us. Best Break-up Spot? "I take them to Hooters," wrote another. Genius.
So we search. We learn. And most of all, we wish you a good read.
Special thanks to Editor Matt Driscoll for commanding this issue, Tacoma artist James Hume for his amazing 3-D artwork and Patrick Snapp for running around town with his camera. – Ron and Ken Swarner, publishers

So, let's see: you talk about the best of tacoma guide endlessly, there are tons of faebook posts from weekly writers, every entry in spew references best of tacoma but you don't post it online until a week later?! way to stay relevant and capture the attentive audience. by next week nobody will give a fuck.
yes! only put in the print edition because everyone knows print media is where it's at!

Dear Weekly Volcano I am dismayed by your addition of 3D graphics to Best of 2010 online as it nearly gave my Grandmother a heart attack. My Grandmother who is staying with me at present is very senile and has taken to wearing a pair of my 3D glasses around the house. We thought this was odd behavior as you can imagine but figured it was harmless enough. This afternoon I happened to leave my laptop on the kitchen table and had just stepped over to the cupboard to get her animal crackers she loves so dearly when she sat down and started clicking away. This is when i heard the screaming and turned to see the look of terror on her face. After calming my Grandmother down I discovered Rich King jamming a guitar at my face in glorious 3D! You will be happy to hear that she seems to be doing fine, and we have decided not to hold your organization responsible. However we have had to get rid of the 3D glasses. we will not be taking any further chances with that sort of thing.

New to area; do you have a best of ' Car repair? ' The plethora of automotive repair centers in the area is a strong indication that they are all questionable....there certainly are a lot of auto repair places in the area and I'm originally from Detroit.
