Maybe your Prom was one of the greatest nights of your life. Maybe it was a nightmare. Maybe you didn’t even go to yours. Whichever is the case, the Prom at Sanford and Sons Saturday to be orchestrated by the Middle Floor Merchants, will be a second chance to revive your glory days.

The theme “One Night in Bangkok” pays tribute to Asian décor but also the ‘80s pop culture that was prevalent when the song by that title was in its heyday.

Sanford and Sons lower level library (Commerce entrance) will be decked out with Eastern-themed decorations like Asian antiques, lanterns, ornate hand-held fans, and a mural depicting a sunset in Thailand. There will also be the absolutely essential disco ball and swirling disco lights. Photos of Thailand will be projected slide-show fashion behind the stage area.

Sanford and Sons wanted to do something for charity that was also fun for the community, explains Gretchen Bailey, owner of Zinnia massage studio and a representative from the prom committee. Proceeds from the Prom will go to Ashley House, a place that helps families build a new life together with their medically fragile children. Like any real prom, there will be a Prom King and Queen announcement at some point during the evening.

“Don’t worry about bringing a date or having the perfect dress,” says Bailey. “It’s just about having fun for a good cause. I hope people will be creative with the dress-up thing and not feel like they have to rent tuxes. They could even wear a T-shirt with a tie painted on it or just some interpretation of what formal means. It’s all kind of tongue-in-cheek.”

Bailey says quite a few single guys have bought tickets, too.

Prom photos will be taken by Paul Uhl and Deborah Page, middle floor merchants who run The Dark Room photography studio at Sanford and Sons. Mindy and Carrie Barker painted the sunset in Thailand backdrop for the photos.

Since no dance is complete without booty shakin’ beats, the committee invited Tacoma bands Girl Trouble and the Fucking Eagles to perform. DJ Tony Rice will be spinning before, in between and after the band performances.

Bailey is an avid Girl Trouble fan.

“When we first brought up the idea about having a prom I said, ‘We have to have Girl Trouble play!’ Bailey explains. “I’ve been going to their shows since I was a teenager.”

Ticket holders are invited to enjoy a 25-percent discount on dinner at Stadium Bistro prior to the event. The three course meal includes salad, entrée and dessert for $30.

Stadium Bistro will also provide free hors d’œuvres and a no-host bar at Sanford and Sons during the Prom.

The middle floor stores will be closed during the party.
