Following the reality TV show trend, local designers and creative teams will be under pressure to craft wearable art within a 24-hour period. Former PBS producer Jamie Chase, now of the community art center Tacoma Art Place on Hilltop Tacoma, will film the process for broadcast during the live fashion show, Inspired Elegance, Saturday, Dec. 1 at Stadium Bistro in Tacoma.
Here’s what happens as the clock ticks. Tacoma Art Place volunteers will partner with low-income women artists, local designers Daniel Blue and Lisa Fruichantie, and Tacoma School of the Arts students. Tacoma’s Embellish Multispace Salon and Appassionato of Fife will lend their immeasurable skill to makeup and hair.
“The most exciting part of Inspired Elegance is empowerment through opportunities. For our community that means the affordable access to art equipment Tacoma Art Place provides,” states Tacoma Art Place president Linda Danforth.
The fashion will be surrounded by art and food. Master Chef Pete Weikel of Stadium Bistro offers a five-course dinner with wine. Tacoma artist Sharika Roland’s works will grace the walls while music by local artists will play during the show. Short documentary clips will be shown between each fashion collection. Deborah Dodson, Tacoma Art Place advisory board member, will emcee the event.
Only 50 tickets will be sold. Proceeds benefit Tacoma Art Place, a non-profit art center based on cooperative principles from sister programs in Mali, West Africa.
