Make it stop. I clicked on The Devil Wears Prada’s MySpace page and was assaulted with a wash volume that shoved me back in my chair.
The Devil Wears Prada — no, not the movie or the book, the metal band — defines hardcore. With machine gun drums, nasty guitar licks and screaming — literally screaming — vocals, these guys make Black Sabbath sound like the Carpenters. Formed in 2005, the Dayton, Ohio, sextet was christened from the best-seller which bears the same name. But here’s the catch, they are a Christian metal band, which had me wondering: “Would Jesus like them?” Whether he would or wouldn’t is neither here nor there, as they are clearly and proudly praising him.
With two vocalists, Mike Hranica (screams and growls) and Jeremy DePoyster (clean) the band presents contrasting views. Shortly after forming, they released their debut EP, Patterns of a Horizon, before jumping on the roster at Victory Records and recording Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord. Their latest, 2007’s Plagues on Rise Records, is just as perversely spiritual in nature as the band’s previous work.
