Movie showtimes and reviews Dec. 24-31
by Bill White
Dec 24, 2008

AUSTRALIA: An Australian Gone With the Wind, a sweeping romantic melodrama and broad family entertainment.  With Nicole Kidman as a British society figure, Hugh Jackman as as rough-hewn cattle drover, and Brandon Walters, wonderful as the young Aborigine who narrates.  Gorgeous film, strong performances, exhilarating images, a powerful but sometimes uncertain consideration about Australian racism. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

THE BOY IN STRIPED PAJAMAS: Bruno (Asa Butterfield) is an 8-year-old growing up in Berlin, circa 1940.  His dad (David Thewlis) is a Nazi official.  One day Bruno gets the unwelcome news that his dad has a new job, and they will all be moving to the country.  There he finds a puzzling farm where the workers all wear striped pajamas, and makes a friend his age on the other side of a barbed wire fence.  A heartbreaking story, a small tragedy wrapped within an immense one.  Do not discuss the details with anyone. (PG-13) Three and a half stars – RE

  • Century Olympia: Wed 2:30, 7:50.
  • The Grand Cinema: Wed 2:30, 4:45, 7.

CADILLAC RECORDS: Rhythm and blues had a child and named it rock ‘n’ roll.  It happened largely at Chicago’s Chess Records, 2120 S. Michigan Ave.  The great Chess roster included Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry and Little Walter.  A film of the great Chess years, heavy on the music, that stars Beyonce Knowles, Jeffrey Wright, Gabrielle Union, Cedric the Entertainer and Mos Def, with Adrien Brody as the enigmatic Leonard Chess, who gave his musicians shiny new Cadillacs but never a good look at their royalties. (R) Three stars – RE

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON: A splendidly made film based on a profoundly mistaken premise: A man is old when he is born and an infant when he dies.  It’s impossible to identify with or care deeply about a story — however well told — that’s essentially a gimmick.  Good performances by Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, many others. Rated PG-13 for brief war violence, sexual content, language and smoking. Two and a half stars — RE

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL: Alien beings land in Central Park with a message only Jennifer Connelly finds out, and she pleads with Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) to save the human race.  A good-looking, well-made remake of the 1951 classic; pity the plot stands still.  Co-starring Kathy Bates. (PG-13) Two stars – RE

DOUBT: A Catholic grade school could seem like a hermetically sealed world in 1964. That’s the case with St. Nicholas in the Bronx, ruled by the pathologically severe principal Sister Aloysius, who keeps the students and nuns under her thumb and is engaged in an undeclared war with the new parish priest. Stars Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Four stars. (PG-13) — RE

FOUR CHRISTMASES: Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon get trapped having to visit the households of their four divorced parents, which are so dysfunctional, this feels more like a Thanksgiving picture, where the families are always miserable. (PG-13) Two stars – RE

MILK: Extraordinary performance by Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first self-identified gay person to win public office in America.  Following him from a personal turning point to the leadership of a powerful political and social movement, the film never objectifies him as a hero, but as an ordinary man: kind, funny, flawed, shrewd, idealistic, yearning for a better world.  Deeply involving, emotionally inspiring. NOTHING LIKE THE HOLIDAYS: For the first time in several years, all the members of their far-flung Puerto Rican-American family gather for Christmas.  A familiar formula, yes, but the actors breathe real life into the characters; funny, sad, corny, romantic, heartfelt, all when it needs to be.  With John Leguizamo, Alfred Molina, Elizabeth Pena, Debra Messing. NIGHTS IN RODANTHE: Richard Gere plays a surgeon.  Diane Lane plays a mother of two, separated from her snaky husband.  To help out a friend, she is taking care of a rustic inn on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  He is the only weekend guest.  A hurricane is approaching.  True love is also approaching. QUANTUM OF SOLACE: A disappointment.  No Q, no Miss Moneypenny, no suave and seductive James Bond, and a Bond girl under-named ... Camille.  The evil villain’s globe-threatening scheme is to control the water supply in ... ROLE MODELS: The kind of movie you don’t see every day, a comedy that is actually funny.  Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott play teammates who drive a super truck from school to school, touting a Jolt-like energy drink.  They get into trouble, are sentenced to community service, and are assigned two problem kids (terrific performances by Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Bobb’e J. Thompson). (R) Three stars – RE

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE: Bridges the two Indias, cutting between poverty and the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.  The story of an orphan born into a brutal early existence.  A petty thief, impostor and survivor, he improvises his way up through the world and remembers everything he has learned.  A miraculous entertainment by Danny Boyle, winner of the Audience Award at Toronto 2008. THE SPIRIT: The Spirit is mannered to the point of madness. There is not a trace of human emotion in it. To call the characters cardboard is to insult a useful packing material. The movie is all style — style without substance, style whirling in a senseless void. The film’s hero is an ex-cop reincarnated as an immortal enforcer; for all the personality he exhibits, we would welcome Elmer Fudd. (PG-13) One star — RE

THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX: One of the most beautifully drawn animated films I’ve seen, rendered in enchanting detail and painterly colors.  The story involves a big-eared mouse named Despereaux, a sniffy rat named Roscuro and other members of the animal and vegetable kingdoms.  It’s a joy to look at frame by frame, but the plot is muddled and could involve us more. TRANSPORTER 3: is a perfectly acceptable brainless action thriller, starring the steely eyed, taciturn Jason Statham, who makes his deliveries on time and with no questions asked, except this time, when he starts caring for his cargo (the delightfully freckled Natalya Rudakova).  Two stunt sequences of remarkable complexity and reckless foolishness. TWILIGHT: Teenage romance between fresh-faced Kristen Stewart and the distant, aloof, handsome, dangerous Robert Pattinson, who plays a vampire.  Lush, beautiful, preposterous, based on the runaway best-seller. Primary audience: 16-year-old girls. They’ll love it. (PG-13) Two and a half stars – RE

VALKYRIE: A meticulous thriller about a conspiracy within the German army to assassinate Hitler.  Tom Cruise is perfectly satisfactory in the leading role, as Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, and a good supporting cast includes standout performances by Kenneth Branagh and Tom Wilkinson.  If the film lacks high-octane excitement, that’s partly because we know the plot failed, partly because veteran officers of the high command school themselves not to betray emotions.  Rated PG-13 for violence and brief strong language. YES MAN: Jim Carrey stars as a bank loan officer who attends a lecture by a self-help guru and agrees to say “yes” to everything.  The problem is, this new policy makes scenes into obvious setups with entirely foreseeable consequences.  Zooey Deschanel is bewitching as his new love, and Terence Stamp is darkly Stampian as the Guru of Yes.
