Showtimes for the week of Sept. 11 - 18
by Volcano Staff
Sep 11, 2008

AMERICAN TEEN: Observes a year in the life of four high school seniors in Warsaw, Ind.  There’s the popular girl, the nerd, the basketball star, the artsy outsider.  Director Nanette Burstein sometimes seems to be guiding the action, and we doubt certain scenes would have really occurred on camera, but the overall effect is convincing and touching. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED: Elegantly mounted and well-acted version of the Evelyn Waugh novel, but not the equal of the (much longer) 1981 TV miniseries.  Matthew Goode plays the middle-class youth who falls in love with both a son and a daughter of the wealthy Marchmain family — and also in love with their fabulous mansion, Brideshead.  Emma Thompson is splendid as the devout Lady Marchmain. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

THE DARK KNIGHT: Batman isn’t a comic book anymore.  Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is a haunted film that leaps beyond its origins and becomes an engrossing tragedy.  It creates characters we come to care about.  That’s because of the performances, because of the direction, because of the writing, and because of the superlative technical quality of the entire production.  The key performance in the movie is by the late Heath Ledger, as the Joker.  Directed by Christopher Nolan. (PG-13) Four stars – RE

DEATH RACE: Hitchcock said a movie should play the audience like a piano.  Death Race played me like a drum.  It is an assault on all the senses, including common.  Walking out, I had the impression I had just seen the video game and was still waiting for the movie.  Mostly involves ceaseless battles among armored cars that use machine guns, rocket launchers, etc., and explode with alarming regularity.  With Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Tyrese Gibson and Ian McShane. (R) Half a star – RE

FROZEN RIVER: Melissa Leo and Misty Upham play two mothers, one white, one American Indian, who live without male support in shabby house trailers on the U.S.-Quebec border: Mohawk territory.  In desperate economic need, they engage in the smuggling of aliens across the border, which involves a perilous car trip across the frozen river.  Not played as a thriller, and director-writer Courtney Hunt doesn’t create a sentimental bonding between the two women.  This is a story of survival.  Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2008. (R) Four stars – RE

  • The Grand Cinema: Thurs 2:20, 4:40, 6:55, 9. Fri-Thurs, Sept. 18 2:20, 6:30. Also Sat-Sun 12:10.

HAMLET 2: British comedian Steve Coogan stars as the harassed flywheel of a drama teacher in a Tucson high school.  Threatened with a shutdown of his program, he desperately stages a sequel to Hamlet, using a time machine to bring back all the characters, as well as Jesus and Einstein.  Manic and funny, with a perfect cameo by Elisabeth Shue, as herself — sort of. JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH: There is a world inside our own, populated by glowing birds, man-eating plants, giant-fanged fish and a T-Rex.  Reaching it via a series of dizzying falls, a geologist, his nephew and an Icelandic babe realize Jules Verne must have seen it before writing his novel.  With Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson and Anita Briem.  In 3-D in some theaters, but the process underwhelms me. (PG) Two stars – RE

THE LONGSHOTS: Based on the true story of 11-year-old Jasmine Plummer, from the Chicago suburb of Harvey, who in 2003 became the first female to play quarterback in the Pop Warner football tournament.  Starring Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee) and Ice Cube as a niece and her uncle, who teaches her all he knows about quarterbacking.  Sidesteps many of the usual clichés of the genre, is warm and touching. (PG) Three stars – RE

THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR: Having exhausted Egyptian mummies (and us) in the earlier two movies, adventurers Rick and Evelyn O’Connell (Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello) journey to China, where their son Alex (Luke Ford) has awakened the dragon emperor.  Tombs, booby traps, a war between two versions of the undead, a sorceress, a three-headed fire-breathing dragon — the movie has all you’d expect from the title and is just plain dumb fun. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS: The answer to the question, “What would happen if a stoner buddy comedy was made by a great director?”  David Gordon Green makes his first mainstream effort, beautifully photographed and often very funny.  Seth Rogen and James Franco star as always-stoned friends who start a drug war after sampling Pineapple Express, a new blend of weed so good that even smoking it, Franco says, is a crime “like killing a unicorn.”  Be aware: Despite a “warning,” the movie is enthusiastically pro-pot. (R) Three and a half stars – RE

RIGHTEOUS KILL: True legends of the big screen star together for the first time since 1995’s Heat.  Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are two New York City cops investigating a vigilante serial killer.  Trailer looks odd.  It looks like Al Pacino playing Al Pacino.  Some of you know what I mean. SEX AND THE CITY: The continuing stories of the four consumerist Gal Pals from the HBO series, who scarcely have a witty line among them and march with curious banality through awkward situations involving “turista,” broken hearts, masturbating dogs, designer labels, lust, runaway cell phones and misunderstandings. (R) Two stars – RE

  • The Blue Mouse: Thurs 7.

THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2: Everything Sex and the City wanted to be.  It follows the lives of four women, their career adventures, their romantic disasters and triumphs, their joys and sadness.  These women are all in their early 20s, which means they’re learning life’s lessons; SATC is about forgetting them.  Lots of warmth and heart, romantic cliches, seductive locations.  With America Ferrara, Alexis Bledel, Blake Lively and Amber Tamblyn. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS: A deadening film that cuts corners on its animation and slumbers through a plot that (a) makes us feel like we’ve seen it all before, and (b) makes us wish we hadn’t.  The characters have hair that looks molded from Play-Doh, bodies that seem arthritic, and moving lips on half-frozen faces — all signs that shortcuts were taken in the animation work. (PG) One and a half stars – RE

STEP BROTHERS: Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly play 40ish sons who still live at home, eating melted cheese nachos and watching TV.  When their parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) get married, they become stepbrothers and have to share the same room.  This leads to violence and language so extreme it seems out of proportion to any comic purpose.  I felt a little unclean. (R) One and a half stars – RE

TRAITOR: Don Cheadle plays a Sudanese who as a boy sees his father killed by a car bomb.  As an adult, he exists as a double agent between the United States and terrorist jihadists.  So deep are his conflicts, and so fine is the acting, that there are fundamental doubts about which side he is traitorous to, and which side has his loyalty.  With Guy Pearce, Neal McDonough, Jeff Daniels. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

TROPIC THUNDER: A troupe of actors, thinking they’re making a Vietnam War movie, gets lost in the jungle and is captured by druglords who think the actors are narcs.  Very funny, with a terrific performance by Robert Downey Jr. as an Australian actor who seems to think he is black.  Directed by Ben Stiller, who stars along with Jack Black, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Danny McBride and Brandon T. Jackson. (R) Three and a half stars – RE

VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA: Woody Allen’s latest, starring Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson as American college girls who spend a summer in Barcelona and become entangled in romance with a raffish painter (Javier Bardem).  Complications develop with the appearance of his former wife (Penelope Cruz): They still love each other, but violence always results when they try to live together.  Witty, amusing, with great locations and a summery sense of all kinds of love in the air. (PG-13) Three stars -– RE

WALL-E: The animated story of the last surviving solar-powered robot, in a world so filled with garbage that humans have escaped into orbiting spaceships.  Directed by Andrew Stanton, who wrote and directed Finding Nemo, it shares that film’s ability to appeal to the whole family, in a story that’s original, ingenious and touching.
