Blue Monkey Art

Jennifer Kuhn, founder of Blue Monkey Art, has been creating eye-catching art since before the decade. Kuhn moved to Washington from Michigan to attend The Evergreen State College at the young age of 18 and has since laid down roots in the Olympia area. With her main focus on mosaics, Kuhn’s impressive interest in recycling and utilizing what might otherwise hit the landfill has enabled her to create stunning, original art to decorate both the home and body using salvaged materials — metal, glass, existing stained glass, fabric, beads, tile — and  some new materials when needed.

The mosaics she makes can be hung indoors, inset as windows, used as wall panels and are appropriate for bathrooms, kitchens or any room in the home or office where a vibrant punch of color and style is desired. Kuhn also crafts stuffed animals and art dolls out of fabric from discarded clothing. These animals are not the typical teddy bear or plush bunny. Her creatures may have sweeping tails and fingerless hands in brilliant blue and yellow as if these animals were visiting from an alternate universe where things are much more exciting.

Kuhn’s sweater dresses seem to be an instant hit as they are crafted in the funky, distressed, re-assembled fashion that is popular right now. The sweater dresses are the perfect length for layering over jeans, tights, leggings, and boots. The wide hood is a smart, functional bonus for Northwesterners.

Kuhn doesn’t stop with mosaics and clothes; she gets into collages and journals and notebooks, too. Her collages are made from the colorful pages of scrapped fashion magazines and found paper objects while the journals and notebooks are handsomely sheathed in the covers of old books.
