Not neo-soul, not urban, and not contemporary R&B, the Next Movement is authentic R&B akin to such legendary Motown units as the Temptations and the Four Tops.
The Chicago vocal group formed in 1971, and while they never reached the height of their more famous contemporaries, they have been laying down the funk for nearly four decades and have no plans to stop anytime soon. With two original members, Camell Haywood and Samuel Thompson Jr., and former Dramatics member Donald Albert, it is as close to the Next Movement of 1971 as you can get.
Chock-full of tight arrangements, fat horns and flawless harmonies, the group is a live act not to be missed. While the band is steady, the masterful skill of the three vocalists leaves room for improvisation. Relying mainly on classic covers, they shift from soul, funk and even Reggae without missing a beat. Songs in their repertoire range from tasty originals to Lionel Ritchie’s “All Night Long” and everything in between. And Oprah called them the best group in Chicago if you need a celebrity endorsement.
