AMERICAN TEEN: Observes a year in the life of four high school seniors in Warsaw, Ind.  There’s the popular girl, the nerd, the basketball star, the artsy outsider.  Director Nanette Burstein sometimes seems to be guiding the action, and we doubt certain scenes would have really occurred on camera, but the overall effect is convincing and touching. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

  • The Grand Cinema: Thurs 2:15, 4:30, 6:45, 9. Fri-Thurs, Aug. 28 2:15, 4:30, 6:45, 9. Also Sat-Sun noon.

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED: Elegantly mounted and well-acted version of the Evelyn Waugh novel, but not the equal of the (much longer) 1981 TV miniseries.  Matthew Goode plays the middle-class youth who falls in love with both a son and a daughter of the wealthy Marchmain family — and also in love with their fabulous mansion, Brideshead.  Emma Thompson is splendid as the devout Lady Marchmain. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

  • The Grand Cinema: Thurs 3:15, 6, 8:45. Fri-Thurs, Aug. 28 3:15, 6, 8:45. Also Sat-Sun 12:30.
  • Regal South Hill 6: Thurs 12:10, 3:10, 6:10, 9:10.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: DELIRIUM: Musicians, singers and dancers perform a state-of-the-art mix of music, dance, theatre and multimedia driven by an urban tribal beat and awe-inspiring visuals. (NR) – BW

  • Longston Place 14: Thurs 7. Sat noon.
  • Regal Martin Village 16: Thurs 7.

THE DARK KNIGHT: Batman isn’t a comic book anymore.  Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is a haunted film that leaps beyond its origins and becomes an engrossing tragedy.  It creates characters we come to care about.  That’s because of the performances, because of the direction, because of the writing, and because of the superlative technical quality of the entire production.  The key performance in the movie is by the late Heath Ledger, as the Joker.  Directed by Christopher Nolan. (PG-13) Four stars – RE

  • Regal Martin Village 16: Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (G), Happily N’ver After (PG).

FRENCH THEATER: Check out these films on Fort Lewis: Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (G) Thurs 7. Journey To The Center of The Earth (PG) Fri 7. Sat-Sun 2. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (PG-13) Fri 9:30. Sat-Sun 7.

GET SMART: Steve Carell makes an ideal Maxwell Smart, the bumbling but ambitious and unreasonably self-confident agent for CONTROL, a secret U.S. agency.  Anne Hathaway is his sidekick, Dwayne Johnson is their fellow agent, Terence Stamp is the Russian villain and Alan Arkin heads the agency.  It’s funny, exciting, preposterous, great to look at, and made with the same level of technical expertise we’d expect from a new Bond movie. (PG-13) Three and a half stars – RE

  • Galaxy Tacoma 6: Thurs 12:30, 2:50, 5:10, 7:30, 9:50.
  • Regal South Hill 6: Thurs 6:30, 9:20.

HANCOCK: Will Smith plays a Skid Row drunk with super powers and a super hangover, Jason Bateman is the PR man who wants to give him a new image, and Charlize Theron is the PR man’s wife, who starts looking at Hancock oddly the moment she sets eyes on him.  And no wonder, as we discover the origins of this most confused of superheroes, who may save a man from being hit by a train, but ends up causing a train wreck.  Sounds like slapstick comedy, but has an unexpected serious turn. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

  • Galaxy Tacoma 6: Thurs 12:55, 2:55, 4:55, 7:35 9:40.
  • Lakewood Cinema 15: Thurs 11:30 a.m., 3:20, 6:25, 9. Fri-Tues 3:50, 6:45.

  • Regal Martin Village 16: Thurs 12:20, 2:50, 5:20, 7:45, 10:20. Fri-Tues 12:10, 7.

HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY: Imagine the forges of hell crossed with the extraterrestrial saloon on Tatooine and you have a notion of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army.  In every way the equal of his original Hellboy (2004), although perhaps a little noisier, it’s another celebration of his love for bizarre fantasy and diabolical machines.  Ron Perlman is strong again in the title role, and del Toro’s imagination provides a new array of fantastical creatures, and a Troll Market that reminded me of the saloon on Tatooine. (PG-13) Three and a half stars – RE

  • Lakewood Cinema 15: Thurs 9:55.
  • Longston Place 14: Thurs 12:05, 6:50. Fri-Tues 6:50, 9:30.

HENRY POOLE IS HERE: Luke Wilson plays a dying man whose neighbor believes she sees the face of Jesus on his house wall.  Henry warns her to stay out of his yard and stop praying to his bad stucco job, but one thing leads to another.  Powerful chemistry between Wilson and Radha Mitchell, as another neighbor.  The film doesn’t say that religious beliefs are real.  It simply says that belief is real.  And it’s a warmhearted love story. (PG) Three and a half stars – RE

  • Lakewood Cinema 15: Thurs 12:40, 4:20, 7:10, 10. Fri-Tues 11:35 a.m., 9:15.

THE HOUSE BUNNY: Anna Ferris is Shelly Darlington a displaced Playboy Bunny who stumbles upon a sorority house struggling to attract a pledge class.  Shelly agrees to teach them the way of makeup and men in order to save their charter.  Also starring Collin Hanks. (PG-13) – BW

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL: Nineteen years after the previous Indy adventure, a film in the same tradition, involving man-eating ants, sword fights between two people balanced on the backs of speeding jeeps, subterranean caverns of gold, vicious femme fatales, plunges down three waterfalls in a row, and the explanation for flying saucers.  Harrison Ford holds up well as Indy, Cate Blanchett is a sublime femme fatale, Karen Allen is back as Indy’s first love, Shia LaBeouf is the boxer with the ducktail.  “Same old same old,” Indy says, but that’s why I liked it. (PG-13) Three and a half stars – RE

  • Blue Mouse Theater: Thurs 7.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH: There is a world inside our own, populated by glowing birds, man-eating plants, giant-fanged fish and a T-Rex.  Reaching it via a series of dizzying falls, a geologist, his nephew and an Icelandic babe realize Jules Verne must have seen it before writing his novel.  With Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson and Anita Briem.  In 3-D in some theaters, but the process underwhelms me. (PG) Two stars – RE

KUNG FU PANDA: A fat, fuzzy panda competes to become the Dragon Master and face the archenemy of the Valley of Peace, in a cute but not compelling animated adventure.  The characters are one-dimensional, except for the wise old master voiced by Dustin Hoffman.  Entertaining for younger audiences. (PG) Three stars – RE

MAMMA MIA!: Movie version of the hit stage musical, with Meryl Streep as the villa owner on a Greek isle and Amanda Seyfried as her about-to-be married daughter.  The girl doesn’t know who her father is, but finds an old diary and invites three likely candidates to her wedding: Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard.  Wall-to-wall with ABBA songs, of course, and energetic dancing.  I was underwhelmed and don’t much like ABBA, but this movie wasn’t made for me.  It was made for the people who will love it, of which there may be a multitude.  You know who you are. (PG-13) Two stars – RE

MIRRORS: First there were ghosts inside Craig T. Nelson’s television set in 1982’s Poltergeist.  Now, Kiefer Sunderland’s home is invaded by evil spirits via his mirrors in French director Alexandre Aja’s remake of a Japanese horror film. (R) – BW

THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR: Having exhausted Egyptian mummies (and us) in the earlier two movies, adventurers Rick and Evelyn O’Connell (Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello) journey to China, where their son Alex (Luke Ford) has awakened the dragon emperor.  Tombs, booby traps, a war between two versions of the undead, a sorceress, a three-headed fire-breathing dragon — the movie has all you’d expect from the title and is just plain dumb fun. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS: The answer to the question, “What would happen if a stoner buddy comedy was made by a great director?”  David Gordon Green makes his first mainstream effort, beautifully photographed and often very funny.  Seth Rogen and James Franco star as always-stoned friends who start a drug war after sampling Pineapple Express, a new blend of weed so good that even smoking it, Franco says, is a crime “like killing a unicorn.”  Be aware: Despite a “warning,” the movie is enthusiastically pro-pot. THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2: Everything Sex and the City wanted to be.  It follows the lives of four women, their career adventures, their romantic disasters and triumphs, their joys and sadness.  These women are all in their early 20s, which means they’re learning life’s lessons; SATC is about forgetting them.  Lots of warmth and heart, romantic cliches, seductive locations.  With America Ferrara, Alexis Bledel, Blake Lively and Amber Tamblyn. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

SPACE CHIMPS: is a goofy animated space opera that sends three U.S. chimpanzee astronauts rocketing to a galaxy, as they say, far, far away.  There they encounter strange life forms and the evil Zartog, who has captured an earlier space probe.  Not in the same science fiction league as Wall-E, but successful, with lots of whiz-bang action and some witty dialogue. STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS: A deadening film that cuts corners on its animation and slumbers through a plot that (a) makes us feel like we’ve seen it all before, and (b) makes us wish we hadn’t.  The characters have hair that looks molded from Play-Doh, bodies that seem arthritic, and moving lips on half-frozen faces — all signs that shortcuts were taken in the animation work. (PG) One and a half stars – RE

STEP BROTHERS: Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly play 40ish sons who still live at home, eating melted cheese nachos and watching TV.  When their parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) get married, they become stepbrothers and have to share the same room.  This leads to violence and language so extreme it seems out of proportion to any comic purpose.  I felt a little unclean. SWING VOTE: Kevin Costner’s new movie is about a presidential election that literally comes down to one man, one vote.  The vote belongs to Bud Johnson, an alcoholic egg inspector from New Mexico, who finds himself the focus of the eyes of the world.  His daughter Molly (Madeline Carroll) sets a process in motion which makes it appear Bud’s vote wasn’t counted, and then it’s all up to him.  With Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper as the presidential candidates, and Nathan Lane and Stanley Tucci as their campaign managers. TROPIC THUNDER: A troupe of actors, thinking they’re making a Vietnam War movie, gets lost in the jungle and is captured by druglords who think the actors are narcs.  Very funny, with a terrific performance by Robert Downey Jr. as an Australian actor who seems to think he is black.  Directed by Ben Stiller, who stars along with Jack Black, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Danny McBride and Brandon T. Jackson. (R) Three and a half stars – RE

VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA: Woody Allen’s latest, starring Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson as American college girls who spend a summer in Barcelona and become entangled in romance with a raffish painter (Javier Bardem).  Complications develop with the appearance of his former wife (Penelope Cruz): They still love each other, but violence always results when they try to live together.  Witty, amusing, with great locations and a summery sense of all kinds of love in the air. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

WALL-E: The animated story of the last surviving solar-powered robot, in a world so filled with garbage that humans have escaped into orbiting spaceships.  Directed by Andrew Stanton, who wrote and directed Finding Nemo, it shares that film’s ability to appeal to the whole family, in a story that’s original, ingenious and touching.
