Pierce County dip into negative territory last week

Despite rain, wind, the Olympics and a Portland band, Showcase Tacoma proved this town can throw a worthy arts and music festival downtown. And The Drug Purse guitarist Joshua Vega smashed his guitar into pieces after their performance. The Weekly Volcano still feels a little soggy. PLUS 1
Metro Parks has announced plans to make Wapato Lake habitable again with two tons of Alka Seltzer. Well, the part that makes it fizz, anyway. Two dumpings of sodium bi-carbonate, totaling 2,000 pounds has been proposed as solution to an earlier chemical treatment intended to kill toxic algae growing in the troubled lake. A miscalculation by the company hired to apply the chemical made the water in the lake so acidic that it killed about two tons of fish. The sodium bi-carbonate will make the lake safe again, and cure a rising epidemic of irritable bowel syndrome noted in local geese, or make them all explode, according to urban legend. PLUS 1
Local lifers working to create and place wayfinding signs downtown hit a snag this week when several city council members choked over the proposed $2.5 million price tag. That sends ‘em back to the drawing board, with hopes of shaving off enough cost to make another, more palatable proposal in time to get on the next biennial budget. Good luck guys. MINUS 1
A 14-year-old reindeer named Holly died this week at the Point Defiance Zoo. Though zoo officials stress that Holly died of age-related issues and that reindeer typically live only seven or eight years in the wild, it’s still sad to realize Holly, who the Trib referred to as “elderly,” will miss Tacoma’s SCAD celebration on Aug 20. Ex Prosecutor Barbara Corey’s lawsuit against Pierce County and head prosecuting honcho Gerald Horne continued in court this week, with closing arguments and jury deliberation held yesterday. Who lied to whom? Who got preferential treatment? Who’s suffered economic and emotional damages? Who’s an egomaniacal dick? All of these questions have grown tiresome. While the good news is the fiasco is almost over, the bad news is Tacoma and Pierce County had to endure another week of the ridiculous drama. MINUS 3
