A positive week in Pierce County
by Volcano Staff

Pierce County Executive John W. Ladenburg directed that all flags in Pierce County be lowered to half-staff this past week. This age-old symbol of mourning and tribute is in memory of East Pierce Fire and Rescue Chief Dan Packer, who was killed firefighting in Northern California July 26. Our deepest condolences to Packer’s family and friends. A solid week tribute deserves a plus. PLUS 2

Hotrod-A-Rama consumed The Swiss and surrounding businesses last weekend. The cars, the music, and the people — one of the friendliest cultures the Weekly Volcano has ever been involved with. Thank you for inviting us. And the cars — wow! They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore. PLUS 2

The Gintz Group, owners of The Mecca condos, have decided they should rent instead of sell condos in a saturated market during an economic recession. Those better be some good rates, guys, ’cause they used to rent rooms for a dollar a minute. Still, rental housing is good. PLUS 1

City of Tacoma and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber have finally reached an agreement about management of Tollefson Plaza. For those unaware, Tollefson Plaza is in Tacoma, right across the street from the Tacoma Art Museum. You might not have noticed that it was intended as public space because it looks like it was abandoned about halfway into construction. Soon, the Chamber will hold a meeting with community stakeholders to discuss how not to make it lame. We won’t be able to make it, so here are some suggestions — chinchilla races, belly dancers, hookah lounge and a corn dog vendor. PLUS 2

The 6th Ave Farmers Market resembled an Aerosmith/Run DMC video Tuesday — and not in a good way. Market sponsored Deborah Page was drowned out on the north end of the market by jazz guitarist Ed Taylor — a stone’s throw away at the Engine House No. 9. Let’s compare schedules people. MINUS 1

Tuesday was National Night Out, meaning neighbors from all over Tacoma rolled out the barbecues and lawn chairs to cook a few burgers and brats in the name of deterring crime. While, indeed, a few would-be villains probably were deterred from criminal activities Tuesday evening, the increase in idle criminals had an effect on food wait times. If the criminals had been out committing crimes instead of eating grub off the barbecue on National Night Out, the Weekly Volcano wouldn’t have had to wait so long for its burger. MINUS 1

Lakewood’s first ever citizen initiative is headed to the November ballot. In an effort to shut down mini casinos, and put an initiative on the ballot that will kill them forever in L-hood, Save Lakewood — a group vehemently opposed to both full scale and mini gambling — gathered some 6,000-plus signatures in support of their ideas. After the signature verification process, it was announced that Save Lakewood had well more than the 3,707 John Hancocks needed to put their initiative on the ballot. Imagine the disappointment when this group learns it’s going to take far more than a ban on mini casinos to save Lakewood. MINUS 2
