Typical!
A normal week in Pierce County even with stolen life jackets

Drivers literally have to slam on their brakes in order to support the speed limit change from 60 mph directly down to 25 mph as they come off 509 onto 705. Tacoma police officers were in full force last weekend, ticketing car after car failing to adhere to this overly abrupt change in speed limits. What is worse: A speeding ticket or another car up your ass? MINUS 2
Pierce County Council Members Tim Farrell and Calvin Goings delivered a proclamation from County Executive John Ladenburg that declares July 12 “Pride Day in Pierce County.” The proclamation was an attempt to make up for a controversial 4-3 vote against providing the County’s blessing for gay pride celebration “Out in the Park.” PLUS 2 (If they would have just given the blessing, it would have been PLUS 4).
University of Puget Sound has been given $250,000 from the Ben B. Cheney Foundation to help build a new Center for Health Sciences. The center will also provide undergrad programs in several medical services disciplines, most of which are experiencing ridiculous shortages. Students from the university’s occupational and physical therapy clinics will offer free care to as many as 300 patients each year. Mmmm … free healthcare. PLUS 1
Two weeks after it opened, a life jacket cabinet at Spanaway Lake — originally stocked with 20 life jackets free to use by anyone — has been cleaned out by thieves. Twice. Only days after the cabinet’s dedication ceremony in late June, almost all of the original jackets were gone. So firefighters stepped up and bought more. A few days after the new life jackets arrive, guess what? They were gone, too. So much for the honor system at Spanaway Lake. MINUS 3
City Manager Eric Anderson got his annual review from the City Council last week. Though, overall, Anderson scored well and seems to deserve his 3.72 percent raise, one council member did ding Anderson for his efforts to cut crime and blight in Tacoma by 50 percent. Well, not really for Anderson’s efforts, but for making the goal in the first place. It seems at least one council member considers it too ambitious. As we all know, the last thing Tacoma needs are ambitious goals. MINUS 2
The Steilacoom Town Council voted 3-2 to spend $280,000 to install wayside horns at two train crossings in an effort to reduce the noise from those blasted conductors riding their loud horns. Next, the Council will target screaming convicts waiting for their transport to McNeil Island. PLUS 1
This week during ceremonies held at Fort Lewis Sgt. Michael Espejo, Sgt. 1st Class Chad Kite and Staff Sgt. Chris Federmann received Silver Stars, the nation’s third-highest award for battlefield bravery. PLUS 4
