Pierce county overcame the Ruston debacle
by Volcano Staff
Jul 10, 2008
Further proving that Ruston is by far the most governmentally screwed up little town the Weekly Volcano has ever seen, this week the morons on the Ruston City Council voted to raise the town’s gambling tax from a variable rate floating between 1 and 3 percent, to a mind-boggling 12 percent. And guess what? There’s only one mini casino in town — the Point Defiance Café and Casino. If the Point Defiance Café ends up paying the increased tax, the club’s monthly payments are expected to go from $1,600 to $10,000, but owner Steve Fabre plans to fight the council’s vote — which was taken after only one reading of the measure and no public comment. If the courts can’t help Fabre, look for the mini casino to significantly scale back operations or close all together. The Point Defiance Café is Ruston’s largest employer. Nice move, Ruston. MINUS 3
Fife Fire Department is celebrating its 60th birthday. In the past 60 years this hard working group of heat hounds has put out some historic fires — including the Daffodil Motel on Pacific Highway in early 1969. This motel has allegedly been known as a haven for illegal prostitution. Thank you Fife Fire Department? PLUS 1
The city of Puyallup received a “clean” audit for fiscal year 2007, according to an independent audit released this week. According to the release, “The audit tested the city’s accountability for public resources, compliance with laws and regulations.” The city is proud but concerned as the word “clean” will no longer be associated with the city after the Sept. 10 Kid Rock show at the Puyallup Fair. City officials have come up with enough money to keep the Martin Luther King Center open through the end of the year. Current operators Martin Luther King Housing Development Center announced earlier this year that it wanted out of the shelter game after city officials cut crucial funding. Talks are underway that could put service organization Catholic Community Services in charge of operations there. Will wonders never cease? PLUS 2
