All four lanes of traffic are now open on Tacoma’s new $24.5 million D Street overpass, including the Dock Street connection, say Tacoma officials. Pedestrian access remains limited to the east side of the overpass until about June 25. The overpass carries vehicles and pedestrians over rail lines in the Dome District, and is expected to unite it will the Thea Foss area. And it will provide another great place to hide and down 40s.  PLUS 2

Tacoma City Council has voted to create an International Financial Services Area downtown. The resolution clears the way for improvements near the current home of Russell Investments, including landscaping and public art. The city also will spend $5 million on education and economic development, with $1 million dedicated to hiring someone to recruit business to fill the new district … with bankers, investment brokers and accountants. Which sucks. Just wait. You’ll see. MINUS 2

Several Weekly Volcano staff members participated in the Sound to Narrows 12-kilometer race Saturday morning. Today Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, and Kitsap Transit urge residents to “Dump the Pump” and ride public transportation. The agencies will be handing out “I dumped the pump” stickers to riders between 6:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. at select Pierce Transit centers. Let’s hope our dyslectic neighbors skip the bus today. PLUS 2

For all those liberals who want to eat organic, support local farmers, live forever and die healthy, Terry’s Berries Organic local farm share is your ultimate answer. Yet there are some cheapskates who want it all but don’t want to pay for it. Well, there is finally a solution. Starting sometime soon, Terry’s Berries will be offering a less expensive, non committing, shop at your own leisure, sample “coupon” alternative to the full (or half) farm share that is currently available. Thank you Terry for making your berries way more accessible. PLUS 1

The long awaited Gintz Group groundbreaking on the rehabilitation of the Luzon Building at South 13th and Pacific was delayed this week. Not surprisingly, money issues are at the heart of the slowdown. Gintz is relying on the City of Tacoma to fork over a portion of the building rehab costs, and private investments for the rest. Apparently, not everything is in place yet. A Gintz Group spokesman said he expects the groundbreaking ceremony to now take place in July. MINUS 1

The News Tribune announced this week that editorial page editor Dave Seago will be leaving the paper as part of 84 job cuts the TNT has been forced into thanks to the crummy economy and uncertainty within the industry. Unfortunately, The Nose still seems to have a job. MINUS 2
