Few people were likely shocked by the sudden resignation of Ruston Mayor Michel Transue, who said in his resignation letter: “Our Town government is presently functioning neither cohesively nor in a fashion that benefits the good people of our Town. A hostile, rancorous, and sometimes ill-mannered environment permeates many of our Town Council meetings and study sessions.” Um … yeah … that’s kind of how it works most places. At least someone from around here had the nads to say it out loud. PLUS 2
It’s official. The New Kids on the Block will play the Tacoma Dome on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, June 7 at 10 a.m. If you truly understand the vast, terrible precision of the Universal Machine, you will realize the terrible things they have set in motion — wristbands, popped collars, the Running Man, colon cancer. Read this and know, without any doubt, that a dark new age is upon us. Weep, Tacoma, and pray to whatever God you know. The ancient evil, known now only as NKOTB, is coming. MINUS 2
Puyallup pedestrians are walking into battle against the angry, selfish, reckless, honking hordes on West Pioneer Avenue. The hordes are armed with V8 engines and fat tires, encased in two tons of steel. The pedestrian weapons? Red flags. The City of Puyallup is trying out a pedestrian flag system to help people safely cross the busy Puyallup Street. PLUS 1
The Joseph Foundation, a group of Northeast Tacoma volunteers from local churches, broke ground on its third home for transitional homeless families with its sights on completion sometime in August 2008. PLUS 2
Moisture issues and structural deterioration conspired to close Hilltop’s People’s Pool effective May 28. And it worked. During an engineering assessment in preparation for planned improvements that were to be paid for by $1.5 million bond passed in ’05, it was discovered that People’s Pool was in far worse shape than anyone thought. And guess what? $1.5 million won’t be enough to fix things. Members of the City Council and Metro Parks are trying to figure out how to address the problem, but that will probably take a while. People’s Pool is closed until they do. MINUS 3
Calling it a front for prostitution, Fox’s strip club in Parkland was raided by federal and local law enforcement Monday in a prelude to almost certain federal charges against Frank Colacurcio Sr — the owner of Fox’s and three other Northwest titty bars. Though Fox’s remains open for the time being, in light of the raid something tells me those tokens aren’t going to pack the same punch in the VIP room as they usually do. Hordes of horny men will have to find another way to contract crabs. MINUS 2
Years of work, tons of construction and millions of dollars does not rectify any problems that involve bottlenecking on Interstate 5 by the Tacoma Dome or access to Highway16 from I-5 south. MINUS 3
