BABY MAMA: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler share exquisite comic timing and “chemistry” in Baby Mama which also features a well-honed script and some terrific supporting players to round out the picture.  Put it all together, and you have one of the funniest movies to be released so far this year. THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN: A solid second film, based on the legendary C.S. Lewis books, Prince Caspian provides good action and excellent special effects, though the storytelling is a bit muddy in the opening sequences, especially for those unfamiliar with either the Lewis novels or the first Narnia film released in 2005. THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM: Rob Minkoff, director of the charming Lion King and Stuart Little series, applies the same quaint sensibilities to what might have been stronger as an all-out martial-arts genre flick.  The hokey but whimsical storyline (based loosely on a traditional Chinese legend) could’ve been a winner if it weren’t so mired in John Fusco’s unmemorable script.  Michael Angarano (24, Seabiscuit) plays a wimpy South Bostonian who finds himself transported back to ancient China, where he faces off against martial-arts stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li, both in dual roles. (PG-13) One 1/2 stars – BM

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL: The latest issue from writer-producer-director Judd Apatow’s anti-stud farm, a sibling of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad.  Part of the fun is the way these films mix and match names and faces to produce the randy-but-tender recombinant comedy that has become synonymous with the Apatow brand.  After his TV-star girlfriend leaves him for a ridiculous British pop singer, Peter (Jason Segel, also the screenwriter) goes to Hawaii to recover — only to find them staying at the same resort.  Ranks with the aforementioned Apatow-produced films for laughs and smarts.  With Kirsten Bell, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Jack McBrayer, Bill Hader. (R) Three 1/2  stars – JE

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL: Nineteen years after the previous Indy adventure, a film in the same tradition, involving man-eating ants, sword fights between two people balanced on the backs of speeding jeeps, subterranean caverns of gold, vicious femme fatales, plunges down three waterfalls in a row, and the explanation for flying saucers.  Harrison Ford holds up well as Indy, Cate Blanchett is a sublime femme fatale, Karen Allen is back as Indy’s first love, Shia LaBeouf is the boxer with the ducktail.  “Same old same old,” Indy says, but that’s why I liked it. (PG-13) Three 1/2 stars – RE

IRON MAN: Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely terrific as Tony Stark/Iron Man, delivering a performance that is both comedic and poignant.  This is an outstanding superhero action adventure that is well-directed and features strong supporting performances — especially from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges. (PG-13) Four stars – BZ

LEATHERHEADS: George Clooney stars in and directs this slapstick, screwball romantic comedy about the birth of “professional” football in the Midwest in 1925.  John Krasinski is the war-hero star of the Duluth Bulldogs, and Renee Zellweger is the wily Chicago reporter who’s out to write an expose that will cook the Boy Wonder’s goose.  The script is less than effervescent, but as a director and an actor, Clooney’s got it all: smarts, wit, timing, a winning face, a good eye — hell, he’s probably even got great legs. (PG-13) Three stars – JE

MADE OF HONOR: Despite the charm of Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan, this formulaic, stale comedy is really nothing more than a rehash of My Best Friend’s Wedding.  This time, Dempsey tackles the Julia Roberts role as the best friend who suddenly realizes he’s losing his true soul mate to another. (PG-13) Two stars – BZ

NIM’S ISLAND: Nim (Abigail Breslin of Little Miss Sunshine) and her marine biologist father, Jack (Gerard Butler), are the only human residents of a remote but idyllic South Pacific island.  Into the plot comes Alex Rover, who’s really Alexandra, a famous author (Jodie Foster) terrified of life.  Directors Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin seamlessly combine adventure, drama, comedy and fantasy as Jack, Nim and Alexandra have to confront their separate but often parallel fears and challenges.  The filmmakers wisely make Nim the center of the story in a way that young audiences will find empowering. (PG) Three stars – NM

SEX AND THE CITY: The continuing stories of the four consumerist Gal Pals from the HBO series, who scarcely have a witty line among them and march with curious banality through awkward situations involving “turista,” broken hearts, masturbating dogs, designer labels, lust, runaway cell phones and misunderstandings.  Probably just the movie fans of the HBO series are hoping for.  With Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Chris Noth as the stolid and distant Mr. Big.  A newcomer, Jennifer Hudson as Parker’s assistant, is the warmest and most human character in the movie. SON OF RAMBOW: Two 11-year-olds in 1980s England are inspired by a pirated copy of First Blood to make their own home video portrait of Rambo.  Will (Bill Milner) performs death-defying stunts, Lee (Will Poulter) mans the video camera, and they’re inspired by the arrival of a misfit French exchange student (Jules Sitruk).  Meanwhile, there’s trouble at home: Will’s family belongs to a strict religious sect, and his mom has collected a suitor who covets the role of his father.  A gentle fantasy, where even the (considerable) violence is softened.  Never quite in focus, but sweet enough, and the young actors have charm. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

SPEED RACER: The cheaply produced 1960s Japanese anime TV series has been reproduced as a $100 million Wachowski brothers feature that, at two hours and nine minutes, is about two hours too long, give or take.  The motion picture, which stops by theaters briefly on its way to DVD and video console, captures (almost) all the chintziness, inexpressiveness and incoherence of the TV show.  That is an achievement, no doubt.  Yet some of us would rather just re-rent Tron (1982), which was not only a more immersive, dimensional and original take on the Commodore 64 video-graphic sensibility, but funnier and more exciting.  With images of Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox and Christina Ricci. (PG) One 1/2 stars – JE

THE STRANGERS: Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star as a couple with romantic difficulties who go for the night to their deserted summer cottage and are terrorized by home invaders.  Competently acted and directed, but what a despairing exercise in nihilism. (R) One 1/2 stars – RE

THE VISITOR: Remember that little indie favorite from a few years ago, The Station Agent?  Synopsis: A lonely man keeps to himself upon losing someone dear to him.  He then meets an energetic stranger, who helps recharge his broken spirit.  A couple of women also enter his life and help to reawaken his tender side.  That’s The Visitor — writer/director Thomas McCarthy’s follow-up to The Station Agent — in a nutshell.  Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) is the lonely man at the center of The Visitor.  He gets caught up in the lives of a couple of foreigners, who are in the country illegally.  The film carries a harsh statement about post-9/11 immigration procedures, and while timely, relevant and compelling, it doesn’t overshadow the heart of the story, which is about human connection.  Particularly lovely is the friendship/romance that develops between Walter and Mouna (Hiam Abbass). (PG-13) Three 1/2 stars – TB

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: A formulaic romantic comedy that would be nothing more than a lame laugher, except for the skill of Cameron Diaz and especially Ashton Kutcher, who milk this story for all it’s worth.  This tale of opposites attracting — and finding themselves accidentally hitched in Vegas — is a mildly amusing tale of love and loss, with a $3 million payday. (PG-13) Two 1/2 stars – BZ

YOUNG@HEART: Stephen Walker’s documentary about a chorus of performers in their 80s and 90s, shows that no one has more reason to stick it to the man than people who are most defiantly not going gently into that good night.  This is not your grandfather’s choir.  Instead of singing songs from their youth like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” or “Sentimental Journey,” these folks tap their orthopedic shoes, tug along an oxygen tank and slam into the music of their great-grandchildren’s generation.  They’ve gone straight from 78s to iPods, literally without skipping a beat.  Their rock is stirring, deeply moving, finally transcendent.
