A group of green thumbs and growers have announced the launch of www.GrowLocalTacoma.com. Co-presented by the City of Tacoma, Tacoma Pierce County Health Department, Tagro, the Pierce Conservation District, and Exit133, GrowLocalTacoma.com is “dedicated to local, healthy food for all” and “overcome(ing) hurdles to eating locally.” Sounds delicious. A group of local organizers went live this week with a new co-housing community on Hilltop. Organizers are now renting units at the Liberty Place Apartments for $595 per month. Co-housing is a nice trend to see in a city where rental units are disappearing faster than Britney Spears’ pop appeal. PLUS 1
The universe is actually filled with super massive black holes. It is also packed with dark energy, a very mysterious material that appears to be pushing out the edges of the universe at a faster and faster rate. We have no idea what this means for humanity. But, hell, the weekend was kickass sunny. Yeah! PLUS 1
Former Bellarmine Prep star pitcher and three time Narrows League MVP Jon Lester threw a no-hitter for the Boston Red Sox Monday. For nine innings he relegated the bats of the Kansas City Royals useless, and thus added his name to the Major League Baseball record books. Not as big as when Lester beat cancer, but still, pretty big. PLUS 3
The Weekly Volcano was invited to The Tacoma School District’s Career and Technical Education Program’s end-of-the-year advisory event Tuesday at Foss High School. The CTE staff members celebrated student achievement in CTE, such as the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence winners and student leadership. It was touching and inspiring, and these teachers care. It was a lovely night. PLUS 1
Wednesday, gubernatorial dingbat candidate Dino Rossi was in Tacoma speaking to Christian business leaders at the Fircrest Golf Club. It was reportedly a “spiritual” event, more about faith than politics. While the Weekly Volcano wasn’t invited, it can only be assumed Rossi spoke about the important role faith plays in his life, especially because he’s a very ugly man with very few discernable talents who will almost surely lose to Democrat Christine Gregoire for the second time in November. Any time Rossi is in Tacoma it’s bad news. MINUS 4
