21: A formula movie “inspired by” a true story about the M.I.T. students who developed a card-counting system that enabled them to win millions at the blackjack tables in Las Vegas.  The excitement is as watered-down as the drinks.  It’s not unwatchable, but you could watch it with your eyeballs tied behind your back and enjoy it just as much. (R) One and a half stars – JE

  • BABY MAMA: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler share exquisite comic timing and “chemistry” in Baby Mama which also features a well-honed script and some terrific supporting players to round out the picture.  Put it all together, and you have one of the funniest movies to be released so far this year. THE COUNTERFEITERS:  A true story of the Nazis’ massive wartime counterfeiting operation, run out of a concentration camp.  It’s a noble effort, but nothing inspired. The Austrian winner for Best Foreign Language Film of 2007, it plays like just that: a rather dull prestige picture that is all too good at fitting the horrors of the Holocaust into a generic movie format. DR. SEUSS’ HORTON HEARS A WHO!: Comedy kings Jim Carrey and Steve Carell deliver a Horton that’s faithful, if not 100 percent, to the spirit of the beloved children’s classic.  Lots of action and slapstick for the kids, plus snarky comments and pop-culture references for their adult keepers.  The all-star cast also includes Carol Burnett, Seth Rogen, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. EXPELLED: Ben Stein’s satirical look at our nation today where scientists are being silenced and some teachers and professors are allowed to teach theories as fact. (PG) – BW

THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM: Rob Minkoff, director of the charming Lion King and Stuart Little series, applies the same quaint sensibilities to what might have been stronger as an all-out martial-arts genre flick.  The hokey but whimsical storyline (based loosely on a traditional Chinese legend) could’ve been a winner if it weren’t so mired in John Fusco’s unmemorable script.  Michael Angarano (24, Seabiscuit) plays a wimpy South Bostonian who finds himself transported back to ancient China, where he faces off against martial-arts stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li, both in dual roles. FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL: The latest issue from writer-producer-director Judd Apatow’s anti-stud farm, a sibling of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad.  Part of the fun is the way these films mix and match names and faces to produce the randy-but-tender recombinant comedy that has become synonymous with the Apatow brand.  After his TV-star girlfriend leaves him for a ridiculous British pop singer, Peter (Jason Segel, also the screenwriter) goes to Hawaii to recover — only to find them staying at the same resort.  Ranks with the aforementioned Apatow-produced films for laughs and smarts.  With Kirsten Bell, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Jack McBrayer, Bill Hader. IRON MAN: Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely terrific as Tony Stark/Iron Man, delivering a performance that is both comedic and poignant.  This is an outstanding superhero action adventure that is well-directed and features strong supporting performances — especially from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges. (PG-13) Four stars -– BZ

LEATHERHEADS: George Clooney stars in and directs this slapstick, screwball romantic comedy about the birth of “professional” football in the Midwest in 1925.  John Krasinski is the war-hero star of the Duluth Bulldogs, and Renee Zellweger is the wily Chicago reporter who’s out to write an expose that will cook the Boy Wonder’s goose.  The script is less than effervescent, but as a director and an actor, Clooney’s got it all: smarts, wit, timing, a winning face, a good eye — hell, he’s probably even got great legs. (PG-13) Three stars – JE

MADE OF HONOR: Despite the charm of Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan, this formulaic, stale comedy is really nothing more than a rehash of My Best Friend’s Wedding.  This time, Dempsey tackles the Julia Roberts role as the best friend who suddenly realizes he’s losing his true soul mate to another. (PG-13) Two stars – BZ

NIM’S ISLAND: Nim (Abigail Breslin of Little Miss Sunshine) and her marine biologist father, Jack (Gerard Butler), are the only human residents of a remote but idyllic South Pacific island.  Into the plot comes Alex Rover, who’s really Alexandra, a famous author (Jodie Foster) terrified of life.  Directors Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin seamlessly combine adventure, drama, comedy and fantasy as Jack, Nim and Alexandra have to confront their separate but often parallel fears and challenges.  The filmmakers wisely make Nim the center of the story in a way that young audiences will find empowering. (PG) Three stars – NM

PROM NIGHT: On my prom night, my date spent the entire evening crying in the bathroom and explaining to anyone who would listen how big a jerk I was.  That was a nightmare.  But nothing like the fright that Donna endures in this week’s teenage horror movie of the week. (PG-13) -– BW

REDBELT: Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in an intense performance as a proudly moral Los Angeles jiu-jitsu instructor, who gets entrapped in David Mamet’s world of cons within cons involving a troubled lawyer (Emily Mortimer), a movie star (Tim Allen), the star’s shifty manager (Joe Mantegna), and the world of a pay-for-TV fight promoter (Ricky Jay).  Some elements, including the ending, are wildly implausible, and others almost impossible to understand, but if you like Mamet, that’s part of the dubious charm. SMART PEOPLE: Dennis Quaid plays a dour lit professor who’s indifferent to his students and just about everything else, including his family.  A widower, he lives with his Young Republican daughter (Ellen Page, toning down her Juno ever so slightly) and ne’er-do-well stepbrother (Thomas Haden Church), who acts as his chauffeur.  Sarah Jessica Parker plays a doctor and former student instrumental in bringing him out of his brittle shell.  Reasonably smart and mildly funny, but not brilliant. SPEED RACER: The cheaply produced 1960s Japanese anime TV series has been reproduced as a $100 million Wachowski brothers feature that, at two hours and nine minutes, is about two hours too long, give or take.  The motion picture, which stops by theaters briefly on its way to DVD and video console, captures (almost) all the chintziness, inexpressiveness and incoherence of the TV show.  That is an achievement, no doubt.  Yet some of us would rather just re-rent “Tron” (1982), which was not only a more immersive, dimensional and original take on the Commodore 64 video-graphic sensibility, but funnier and more exciting.  With images of Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox and Christina Ricci. (PG) One and a half stars – JE

THEN SHE FOUND ME: There are many nice moments in this film by Oscar-winning actress Helen Hunt, who not only stars, but also makes her directorial debut and carries a screenwriting credit.  But too many subtle inconsistencies keep those moments from connecting to anything long enough to hold the film together.  April (Hunt) is adopted, a status that has defined her life, so much so that all she can think about is bearing a child of her own.  At 39 her biological clock is ticking, and to make matters worse, her boy-man husband, Ben (Matthew Broderick), leaves her after less than a year of marriage.  Enter Frank (Colin Firth), a damaged love interest, and Bernice (Bette Midler), April’s birth mother, and a complicated, emotional mess ensues. (R) Two and a half stars – TB

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: A formulaic romantic comedy that would be nothing more than a lame laugher, except for the skill of Cameron Diaz and especially Ashton Kutcher, who milk this story for all it’s worth.  This tale of opposites attracting — and finding themselves accidentally hitched in Vegas — is a mildly amusing tale of love and loss, with a $3 million payday. (PG-13) Two and a half stars – BZ

YOUNG@HEART: Stephen Walker’s documentary about a chorus of performers in their 80s and 90s, shows that no one has more reason to stick it to the man than people who are most defiantly not going gently into that good night.  This is not your grandfather’s choir.  Instead of singing songs from their youth like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” or “Sentimental Journey,” these folks tap their orthopedic shoes, tug along an oxygen tank and slam into the music of their great-grandchildren’s generation.  They’ve gone straight from 78s to iPods, literally without skipping a beat.  Their rock is stirring, deeply moving, finally transcendent.
