Tacoma confectionary Brown & Haley debuted its latest contribution to candy culture last week. Roca Buttercrunch Thins come in four varieties: Milk Chocolate Butter Toffee, Dark Chocolate Butter Toffee, Milk Chocolate Caramel and Dark Chocolate Truffle. Scientists have contended in recent years that cocoa and other chocolates may keep high blood pressure down, help keep arteries clear and provide antioxidant protection. But seriously … tiny sticks of chocolate and butter toffee …mmmm… PLUS 2

Today marks the beginning of National Bike to Work Month. In Tacoma and Pierce County, employees are encouraged to do lots of bike stuff, and ride their bicycles to work.  According to commute co-op Pierce Trips, if you live within five miles of your workplace, biking may not be as hard as you think. With gas hitting $3.75 a gallon, we thinks Bike to Work Month is gonna be crackin’ this year. PLUS 2

What’s up with the large man who strolls up and down Fawcett Avenue in downtown Tacoma at 5 a.m. speaking gibberish at the top of his lungs? MINUS 1

Broadway Center hosted a community forum on hip-hop Sunday at Theatre on the Square. A hundred concerned citizens, local musicians, professors, and community leaders held a hip-hop group hug with misconceptions revealed and positive ideas for future concerts and promotion. Next up? Chinese Opera. PLUS 2

After receiving a ticket for allegedly not stopping at a neighborhood stop sign, a DuPont resident was ready to fight the system and declare not guilty.  Apparently he’s not the only one as it’s widespread knowledge that DuPont officers won’t show up to court when challenged. Is this because they know they accused someone wrongfully? Or because two Starbucks in such a small town has them confused on their whereabouts? PLUS 1

A captured sea lion from the Columbia River, lovingly named B-198, died at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium this week after being brought to Tacoma as part of a relocation effort. It seems B-198 was alarmingly obese, and had a thing for munching on helpless salmon near the Bonneville Damn. As part of the relocation process, B-198 was given anesthesia for a health screening. B-198 never resumed regular breathing after the sedation and passed away on Tuesday. RIP, B-198. MINUS 3

The recession and faltering economy hit close to home this week, as City Manager Eric Anderson reported to the City Council that real estate tax revenue is way down this year and Tacoma will likely collect only half the money it expected from the excise tax. This will likely mean a cutback on capital projects for our fair city. I guess that bobble-head Baarsma statue I’ve been pushing for in Tollefson Plaza will have to wait. MINUS 2
