Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber has announced that local darling Chelsea Levy will replace Paul Ellis as the organization’s Metropolitan Development Director. Levy has roots here and has worked on campaigns for outgoing Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg and Congressman Norm Dicks. She recently completed a couple of public planning degrees at UW Seattle, and was most recently an intern with the City of Seattle’s design department. Fresh blood and a strong background almost make up for the loss of the seasoned and near-superhuman Ellis. We hope she has a strong back. MINUS 1
Of all the fund-raising car washes that sprout up on any warm Pacific Northwest day, almost all are illegal. Due to environmental issues and concerns, Pierce County has established laws against drainage of any type of soap into grass, soil, or drains. Only in appropriate places, such as actual car washes, is it legal to put soap down a drain. Yo, dad out there in the driveway washing your car: You’re killing the salmon! MINUS 4
“Mexican Inspired, Blues Infused” is the phrase used to introduce Gringo de Loco restaurant, which has officially and publicly replaced the amazing den of drag queens formerly known as La Costa as of this past week. The menu is distinctly less interesting, and the people that work there dress gender appropriate. But it does have a nice, new exterior, and promises to be a player in the local music scene — specifically inserting some jazz, blues and Cuban rhythms into the local mix. PLUS 1
Due to the sad decline in overall intellectual acumen among students over the years, not merely of the astonishing spread of lazy slackerhood, or the fact that cell phones and iPods and excess TV exposure are short-circuiting the minds of the upcoming generations, or the hours of posting dirty pictures on their blog Orting Must Die while munching on two Taco Bell Double-Supremo Burritos, Puyallup school officials will not let students compete in sports or other activities unless they maintain a C average beginning next year. Democrats took a sunshine break from their rally inside the Greater Tacoma Convention Center to chow on ribs from the Obama BBQ truck on Broadway. The Daffodil Grand Floral Parade rolled down Pacific Avenue and drew 55,000 before calling it a day in Orting. Downtown clubs hosted blues musicians, classic cars and smiles as part of the Gray Sky Blues Festival. We sipped tea on the sidewalk in front of Mad Hat Tea Company. Saturday was a good day. PLUS 4
Oklahoma got a taste of the talent they’re in store to inherit when the Supersonics stunningly beat the Dallas Mavericks this week to close out their season and almost certainly their lifespan in Seattle. Clay Bennett is a douche bag extraordinaire. Seriously, f*** that guy. MINUS 2
Tax day, bitches! Unless you’re getting a refund from Uncle Sam, Tuesday was D day, which in this economy likely equates to “d” for debt, as in now in debt to the feds. Thank god for those late night tax relief infomercials. MINUS 1
