Pierce County Dental Foundation recently provided the local Werlin Reading Teams Foundation with a grant that will help provide Werlin kids with books about dental hygiene. Many of the kids in the Werlin program live in less-than-ideal conditions, and will benefit enormously from this gift, according to Werlin administrators.  PLUS 2

Tacoma’s City Council appointed Green Ribbon Climate Action Task Force began a series of presentations this week outlining recommendations for the city and surrounding community to consider in the effort to reduce greenhouse gases and curb global warming. It’s about time. PLUS 1

Public schools all around Pierce County are opting out of traditional playground equipment. Worried about injuries and lawsuits, schools are replacing all swings, see-saws, merry-go-rounds, and any equipment that may be fun for kids. From now on a simple climbing system and one ball will be available for recess. Any kid caught running will be immediately ordered a “time out.” MINUS 3

In response to a ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year that awarded Lakeview Light and Power a $1 million refund from the Bonneville Power Administration, the nonprofit utility company plans to pass the refund on to their customers in Lakewood and Parkland in the form of free electricity in April. By the same settlement, Tacoma Power should receive nearly $13 million from BPA, however they have no plans to offer free electricity anytime soon. PLUS 4 for customers of Lakeview (MINUS 2 for customers of Tacoma Power).

Thanks to our woeful economy, which everyone except Gov. Chris Gregoire and President Bush seem cognizant of, Stadium Bistro served its last mouthwatering dish on Saturday, April 5. It was a sad day. Hopefully you got a chance to stop in one last time to pay your respects. Stadium Bistro deserved them. MINUS 2

McKinley Hill residents united to oppose the mothballed Rogers Elementary School being converted into a church on the grounds that the historic property with panoramic views would be exempt from property taxes. Rather than fight school owner Destiny City Church the Dome Top Neighborhood Alliance decided to help the church find a suitable buyer. It’s that kind of action that will help McKinley Hill to bloom again. PLUS 2
