4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS: The story of two young women seeking an abortion for one of them in Ceausescu’s Romania, circa 1988.  Their experience is a nightmare, not least because of a merciless abortionist, but also because of the pregnant character’s persistent self-absorption and cluelessness.  Told in an effective, understated style by writer-0rector Cristian Mungiu. The 2007 Palme d’Or winner at Cannes. (NR) Four stars – RE

  • The Grand Cinema: Thurs 4, 6:25, 8:55.

BE KIND, REWIND: After every tape in a VHS rental store is inadvertently erased, Jack Black and Mos Def don’t want the store owner (Danny Glover) to find out.  So they set to work to “re-enact” the films in low-tech home movies. (PG-13) Two and a half stars – RE

  • Longston Place 14: Thurs 12:55, 7:15.

THE BANK JOB: A serviceable B-grade British heist movie, The Bank Job is no better than its generic title.  It front-loads the naughty sex and back-loads the plot twists (the titular crime takes place in the middle), but apart from the prominence of Princess Margaret in the goings-on, it’s a pretty routine job, as the use of the hackneyed phrase “plot twists” earlier in this sentence should indicate. (R) Two and a half stars – JE

CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR: Based on a true story.  Tom Hanks as a hard-drinking Texas congressman who, at the urging of a Houston socialite (Julia Roberts), uses his congressional subcommittee to arrange a secret $1 billion arms deal between Israel and Afghan freedom fighters, with Pakistan as the intermediary.  That results in the defeat of the Russians, and the beginning of the end of the Cold War. (R) Three stars – RE

  • Blue Mouse Theater: Fri-Wed 7. Sat-Sun 4:15.

COLLEGE ROAD TRIP: The sort of movie that gets described as “fun for the whole family,” but it really isn’t.  Raven-Symone plays a high school whiz kid visiting prospective colleges with her overprotective police chief father (Martin Lawrence).  This movie’s jokes and trust-your-offspring sentiments have been heard 1,000 times.  With Donny Osmond. (G) Half star – DJ

DR. SEUSS’ HORTON HEARS A WHO!: Comedy kings Jim Carrey and Steve Carell deliver a Horton that’s faithful, if not 100 percent, to the spirit of the beloved children’s classic.  Lots of action and slapstick for the kids, plus snarky comments and pop-culture references for their adult keepers.  The all-star cast also includes Carol Burnett, Seth Rogen, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett, with calm narration from Charles Osgood to rein in the often fast and furious proceedings. (G) Three stars – LE

IN BRUGES: Two Dublin hit men (Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell) are ordered to hide out in Bruges, Belgium, after a hit goes very wrong.  Along the way, there are times of great sadness and poignancy, times of abandon, times of violence, times of goofiness, and that kind of humor that is REALLY FUNNY because it grows out of character and close observation. (R) Four stars – RE

JUNO: Very smart, very funny and then very touching; it begins with the pacing of a screwball comedy and ends as a portrait of characters we have come to love.  Ellen Page in an Oscar-worthy performance as a pregnant 16-year-old who decides to keep the child.  With J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney wonderful as her parents, older and wiser than most parents in teenage comedies. (PG) Four stars – RE

SEMI-PRO: Comedic MVP Will Ferrell slam-dunks this Guy Flick, playing the coach, GM, power forward and promotions chief of the Flint Tropics, an ABA franchise on the verge of extinction in 1976.  With Woody Harrelson again showing off his white-man’s leap, it’s a nonstop laugh-in that’s not just for hoops junkies. THERE WILL BE BLOOD: Daniel Day-Lewis in a virtuoso performance as an obsessed loner, starting with nothing and becoming a California oil tycoon in a life dominated by greed, duplicity, hatred and loneliness.  Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic is ambitious and relentless as the study of a human monster.  Magnificent visuals created by cinematographer Robert Elswit and set designer Jack Fisk.  A debatable ending, and the film’s reach exceeds its grasp, which is not a dishonorable thing. THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES: A terrific entertainment for the whole family, except those below a certain age, who are likely to be scared out of their wits.  A family moves into a creepy old mansion and discovers it is already inhabited by creatures from the spirit world.  Starring Freddie Hightower as twins, Sarah Bolger as their sister, and Mary-Louise Parker as their mom, plus a supporting cast of gifted actors and impressive effects.  But it should be rated PG-13.
