BE KIND, REWIND: After every tape in a VHS rental store is inadvertently erased, Jack Black and Mos Def don’t want the store owner (Danny Glover) to find out. So they set to work to “re-enact” the films in low-tech home movies. I felt positive and genial while watching it, but I didn’t break out in paroxysms of laughter. Written and directed by the usually more brilliant Michel Gondry. (PG-13) Two and a half stars – RE

CHARLIE BARTLETT: Anton Yelchin is appealingly goofy in this teen comedy about a kid’s yearning for popularity won by illegally selling prescription drugs to his fellow students. Like many of John Hughes’ high school movies it presents a fantasy about kids from different social circles — nerds, jocks, punks, cheerleaders, drama clubbers — coming together to fight adult authoritarianism. Co-starring Hope Davis, Kat Dennings and Robert Downey Jr., dominating every scene he’s in as the drunken school principal. (R) Two and a half stars – JE

DEFINITELY, MAYBE: As the lead in director Adam Brooks’ bittersweet romantic comedy, Ryan Reynolds finally steps into a charming, vulnerable character that perfectly fits his comedic talents. He plays Will Hayes, a thirty-something advertising whiz who agrees to tell his 10-year-old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), about the women he dated before her mom, but he changes the names and Maya must guess which one is her mother. With Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher and Rachel Weisz as the women in his life. (PG-13) Three stars – MH

FOOL’S GOLD: A mindless Funjet excursion that doesn’t take as long, cost as much or leave you as sunburned. Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson are a freshly divorced couple thrown back together in pursuit of an 18th-century ship’s lost riches in the Bahamas. Donald Sutherland slums as a yacht owner. (PG-13) Two stars – RE

JIMMY CARTER: MAN FROM PLAINS: A low-key but insightful documentary about how the former president, now 83, maintains a ceaseless schedule of travel, speeches, talk show appearances and meetings, most devoted to his obsession with peace in the Middle East. His beliefs, both political and religious, seem to reinvigorate him; he avoids partisan politics but founds his life on deep values. Inspirational. Directed by Jonathan Demme. (PG) Three stars – RE
- The Grand Cinema: Thurs 4:10.
JUMPER: Hayden Christensen can “jump” anywhere anytime. Samuel L. Jackson wants to kill him. In Giza and New York and London and Paris and Rome and Tokyo and Ann Arbor. There are no rules. There is no plot. A series of random events occur. Sometimes they’re so silly they make you laugh. Most of the time you’d rather be anywhere else. (PG-13) One and a half stars – JE

JUNO: Very smart, very funny and then very touching; it begins with the pacing of a screwball comedy and ends as a portrait of characters we have come to love. Ellen Page in an Oscar-worthy performance as a pregnant 16-year-old who decides to keep the child. With J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney wonderful as her parents, older and wiser than most parents in teenage comedies. (PG) Four stars – RE

MICHAEL CLAYTON: George Clooney plays a slick, efficient but weary fixer for a big law firm, Sydney Pollack is the head of the firm, Tom Wilkinson is the partner who has just stripped naked during a deposition hearing in Milwaukee, and Tilda Swinton represents the corporate client who is horrified to find such a man leading their defense. (R) Four stars – RE

NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS: Without a doubt the most absurd and fevered plot since “National Treasure” (2004). Starring Nicolas Cage. (PG) Two stars – RE

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN: Regards a completely evil man with wonderment, as if astonished that such a merciless creature could exist. He is Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who travels Texas and kills people with a cattle stun gun. He is one strand in a plot involving a drug deal gone bad. Another is a sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) and a third is a hunter (Josh Brolin), a poor man who comes across $2 million in drug money. (R) Four stars – RE
- AMC Narrows Plaza 8: Thurs 2:30, 5:10, 7:55. Fri-Sun 1:50, 7:20. Also Sat 11 a.m. Mon-Thurs, March 13 2:30, 7:55.

THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL: It’s Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman) versus her sister Mary (Scarlett Johansson) and Henry VIII (Eric Bana) in this familiar genre picture about treachery in the House of Tudor. It’s a historical drama about backstabbing and decapitation in the court of Henry VIII, with ancestors in Shakespeare’s illustrious Henry Histories. It’s also a political thriller, roiling with plots, power plays and internecine intrigue; a family melodrama about two sisters vying for the favors of the king; and a royal bodice-ripper, although the only chest exposed is Eric Bana’s because it’s PG-13. (PG-13) Two and a half stars – JE
- Century Olympia: Thurs 11:35 a.m., 2:15, 5, 7:45, 10:30. Fri-Thurs, March 13 11:35 a.m., 2:15, 5, 7:45, 10:30.

- Regal South Hill Cinema 6: Thurs 12:40, 3:20, 6:50, 9:40. Fri-Thurs, March 13 12:30, 3:40, 6:30, 9:15.
PENELOPE: First-time director Mark Palansky brings us Tim Burton-light with his debut, “Penelope,” a fanciful romantic fable in which the title character was born with a pig snout for a nose. Surgery is out of the question, as the only thing that will remove the “curse” is if Penelope (Christina Ricci) finds true love. Enter Max (James McAvoy), who pursues her at first for money, but then really falls for her. What bumps the derivative “Penelope” up from a two-star rating is the acting ensemble. Give casting director Susie Figgis a round of applause. And Palansky while you’re at it, because he was able to get these actors to rise above the so-so script. Is there a better character actor working today than Peter Dinklage? And the great Catherine O’Hara plays Penelope’s clueless, neurotic mother. (PG-13) Three stars – TB
- Century Olympia: Thurs noon, 2:25, 4:50, 7:10, 9:30. Fri-Thurs, March 13 noon, 2:25, 4:50, 7:10, 9:30.

PERSEPOLIS: The story of an Iranian girl’s coming of age. Born under the shah, she and her family were not good fits after his fall and the rise of militant Islam. Outspoken, she’s sent to family friends in Vienna to keep her out of trouble, finds unhappiness, returns, is homesick for a nation that no longer exists. Told in beautifully stylized black-and-white animation, based on the autobiogaphy of Marjane Satrapi, who co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud. Voices by Chiara Mastroianni as Marjane and Catherine Deneuve as her mother. (PG-13) Four stars – RE
- The Grand Cinema: Thurs 6.
THE SAVAGES: The time has come for Wendy and Jon Savage (Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman) to relocate their aged father (Philip Bosco) from his retirement home to a nursing home. The process is difficult, opens old wounds and yet is not without humor. Dad is a hostile curmudgeon who doesn’t make it easier. The performances depend on nuance, and writer-director Tamara Jenkins is quietly insistent that we observe little moments and dropped words and exchanged glances. (R) Three and a half stars – RE
- The Grand Cinema: Thurs 3:40, 6:10, 8:35. Fri-Thurs, March 13 3:40, 6:10, 8:35. Also Sat-Sun 1. Mon-Wed no 3:40.
SEMI-PRO: Comedic MVP Will Ferrell slam-dunks this Guy Flick, playing the coach, GM, power forward and promotions chief of the Flint Tropics, an ABA franchise on the verge of extinction in 1976. With Woody Harrelson again showing off his white-man’s leap, it’s a nonstop laugh-in that’s not just for hoops junkies. (R) Three and a half stars – JJ

THERE WILL BE BLOOD: Daniel Day-Lewis in a virtuoso performance as an obsessed loner, starting with nothing and becoming a California oil tycoon in a life dominated by greed, duplicity, hatred and loneliness. Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic is ambitious and relentless as the study of a human monster. Magnificent visuals created by cinematographer Robert Elswit and set designer Jack Fisk. A debatable ending, and the film’s reach exceeds its grasp, which is not a dishonorable thing. (R) Three and a half stars – RE

Starring Freddie Hightower as twins, Sarah Bolger as their sister, and Mary-Louise Parker as their mom, plus a supporting cast of gifted actors and impressive effects. But it should be rated PG-13.
