Kiss Kiss Kill Kill (Hellcat Records)

Danish band the Horrorpops released their third album Kiss Kiss Kill Kill, earlier this month, bringing to the punk rock world a true genre mixed sound. Subtitled 12 Tales About Love and Horror, the album starts out strong with stand up bass and twangy guitar typical of their psychobilly and rockabilly influences. By title track “Kiss Kiss Kill Kill” and “Everything’s Everything,” their bluesy, new wave sounds come out. “MissFit” even does a Talking Heads breakdown with lyrics, “My fist, in the middle of your face,” replacing original “Our House” lyrics. “Hitchcock Starlet,” a slower love ballad, brings out the band’s pop influence with a tribute to the filmmaker.

The album wavers between the true psycho-rockabilly style in “Horror Beach Pt. II,” (after “Horror Beach” that appeared on the 2004 release Hell Yeah!) and the more poppy lyrics heard in “Keep My Picture,” reminiscent of most pop-punk teenage love songs. Still, even the singsong “la la la la” in “Private Hall of Shame” makes the album’s end as strong as its start. Kiss Kiss Kill Kill is slightly more produced than earlier Horrorpops albums with more pop influence, but is still enjoyable for lovers of punk rock and good stand up bass.
