Rock band hits Tacoma before tour

I usually consider myself to be a step above lowbrow gossip journalists, but sometimes even I stoop to low levels.

There’s a lot to be excited about regarding the recent opening of Satellite Coffee, located where the old Temple of the Bean once lived above Supernova Hair and Tattoo. Any time a new hangout surfaces in Tacoma there’s reason for celebration. If the hangout serves well-pulled shots of espresso in a pop history local it’s even better. However, the fact that Supersuckers guitarist Ron Heathman co-owns Satellite Coffee must certainly be the most exciting aspect of all.

I know, I know. I’m treading on Natasha territory.

But hear me out. Not only is it cool that one of the Supersuckers calls Tacoma home, as I remember Eddie Spaghetti revealing about Heathman at a show at Fenders way back when, but now one of the Supersuckers works among us — meaning Heathman’s not embarrassed to be seen here. Though the band’s MySpace page still lists Seattle as the Supersucker’s home, Tacoma knows the truth. This country-tinged rock band is now at least 25 percent Tacoma’s. With as much shit as Tacoma has taken over the years, 25 percent of the Supersuckers sounds pretty good.

The Supersuckers will play Hell’s Kitchen along with Top Heavy Crush on Wednesday, Dec. 5. It will kick off a West Coast tour that spans the month of December and closes with three shows at LA’s Viper Room.

Once it’s over, the band will return home … at least one of them to the 253.
