by Bill White
Oct 18, 2007

3:10 TO YUMA: Christian Bale plays an Easterner who lost a leg in the Civil War and has now come to the Arizona territory to try ranching.  Russell Crowe plays the vicious leader of a gang feared in the territory.  Almost by unlucky fate, the rancher joins a posse to bring the killer to a nearby town where he will be taken by train to prison.  Splendid dialogue and acting, also by Peter Fonda, Ben Foster and Gretchen Mol, restore the wounded heart of the Western and return it to its glory days.  Directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line”). ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: Here is a bold, beautiful, visually enchanting musical where we walk INTO  the theater humming the songs. Julie Taymor's  "Across the Universe" is an audacious marriage of cutting-edge visual techniques, heartwarming performances, 1960s history and the Beatles songbook. With Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther and T.V. Carpio, who sings "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and I realized how wrong I was to ever think that was a happy song. It's not happy if it's a hand you are never, ever going to hold. Lurking here and there: Bono, Eddie Izzard and Joe Cocker. HHHH — RE

THE BRAVE ONE: Jodie Foster plays a radio talker whose fiance is murdered by muggers in Central Park.  Recovering from her own wounds, she buys a gun for self-protection, which turns into revenge.  This superior, perceptive thriller isn’t a “Death Wish” remake, but a psychological study of a subtle understanding that takes shadowy form between Foster and a detective played by Terrence Howard. Directed by Neil Jordan. (R) HHH1/2 – RE
Galaxy Tacoma 6: Thurs 12:50, 7.
Longston Place 14: Thurs 12:35, 3:25, 6:45, 9:35.

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM: Run, Jason, Run.  The Bourne films have taken chases beyond a storytelling technique and made them into the story.  This time Jason hurtles through London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris, Tangier and Turin in search of the identity the CIA took from him. Matt Damon plays a man who survives one impossible situation after another, in a superior action thriller that doesn’t much care who his enemies are, as long as he’s in a big hurry to find them or escape them.  With Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney. (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE

EASTERN PROMISES: One of David Cronenberg’s finest films with Viggo Mortensen as a driver for the Russian Mafia in London, and Naomi Watts as a midwife determined to protect the life of a newborn infant.  A diary leads her to the sealed world of the Russians, led by Armin Mueller-Stahl as the patriarch and Vincent Cassel as his son; the result isn’t exactly a crime story, but a thriller about human nature.  Scenes of startling violence. (R) HHHH ¬– RE

ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE: Weighed down by its splendor.  There are scenes where the costumes are so sumptuous, the sets so vast, the music so insistent, that we lose sight of the humans behind the dazzle of the production.  But Cate Blanchett is magnificently regal in the title role, and Clive Owen plays a romantic, swashbuckling, if historically inaccurate, Sir Walter Raleigh.  Directed by Shekhar Kapur, who also made the much better “Elizabeth” (1998). (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

GOOD LUCK CHUCK: The dirty movie of the year, with Dane Cook starring as a dentist with a curse: Every woman he sleeps with immediately leaves him for the husband of her dreams.  Jessica Alba plays the woman of his dreams, but he’s afraid to sleep with her because, obviously, etc.  With Dan Fogler as the best friend and breast fetishist.  Potty-mouthed and icky. (R) H – RE

HAIRSPRAY: Pure fun, from the moment a roly-poly teenager named Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) bounces out of bed and serenades the neighborhood with “Good Morning, Baltimore!”  Circa 1962, she dreams of getting on the local TV teen dance show, but on her way there she gets indignant about how the show is all-white except for one day a month.  Based on the 1988 movie and the 2002 Broadway musical; still fresh.  With John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Christopher Walken. (PG) HHH1/2 – RE
Blue Mouse: Nightly 7. Also Sat-Sun 4.

THE HEARTBREAK KID: Farrelly brothers remake of Elaine May’s splendid 1972 comedy is sunk by vulgarity that breaks the fabric of the characters.  Ben Stiller and Malin Akerman play newlyweds who turn out to be spectacularly incompatible, while he falls in love with a babe (Michelle Monaghan) he meets on the beach.  The transgressive material is badly judged, and the characters become unpleasant not only to each other, but to us. (R) HH – RE

INTO THE WILD: Sean Penn directed this much anticipated adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s bestselling book about a college student who drops out of society to hitchhike across America with Alaska being his final destination.  Emile Hirsh stars as the adventurous and tragic Chris.  Also stars Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Catherine Keener and Vince Vaughn. (R) – BW

Regal Martin Village 16: Fri-Thurs, Oct. 25 12:15, 4:05, 7:25, 10:40.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON: I never use the words “must-see,” which have been cheapened by association with so many films you need not see.  But this extraordinary documentary, interviewing many of the surviving Apollo astronauts about their voyages to the moon, combines restored and in many cases never-before-seen moon footage into a spellbinding experience.  Especially recommended for those to whom Apollo is only a word in a history book. (PG) HHHH – RE
The Grand Cinema: Thurs 4:45, 7.

IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH: Tommy Lee Jones plays a Vietnam veteran who learns his son, just returned home from Iraq, has gone AWOL from Fort Rudd.  Doesn’t sound right to him, and he drives down to investigate, crossing paths with a local detective (Charlize Theron) and a military policeman (Jason Patric).  Not pumped up with action, not a “thriller,” but a portrait of a man in pain, who stubbornly just keeps on digging.  Another masterful film from Paul Haggis (“Crash”). (R) HHHH – RE
The Grand Cinema: Thurs 3, 5:35, 8:15.
Yelm Cinemas @ Prairie Park: Thurs 12:35, 6:10.

THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB: Six members of a book club read Jane Austen’s six novels over six months of their lives, in a wise and witty romantic comedy where Austen sometimes seems to be advising them.  You don’t need to have read the books to enjoy the movie (but you may want to afterward).  With Kathy Baker, Maria Bello, Emily Blunt, Amy Brenneman, Hugh Dancy, Maggie Grace, Lynn Redgrave and Jimmy Smits. (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE
The Grand Cinema: Fri-Sun 2, 4:15, 6:30, 8:45. Also Sat-Sun 11:45 a.m. Mon-Wed 4:15, 6:30, 8:45. Thurs, Oct. 25 2, 4:15, 6:30, 8:45.

Regal Martin Village 16: Thurs 10:30.
Regal South Hill Cinema 6: Thurs 9:55.

THE KINGDOM: “The Kingdom” is one of many movies in the ever growing “boy the Middle East sucks” genre that’s taken over theaters since it became clear to most of the country that the war on terror isn’t going to be easily won.  But director Peter Berg’s film is more than just another face in the crowd.  It’s by far the best of that depressing, sand-soaked group; mixing action and intentionally obvious political relevance together in a movie that’s part police procedural, part military action, and all smarts.  Stars Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner. (R) HHH1/2 – JT

MICHAEL CLAYTON: George Clooney plays a slick, efficient but weary fixer for a big law firm, Sydney Pollack is the head of the firm, Tom Wilkinson is the partner who has just stripped naked during a deposition hearing in Milwaukee, and Tilda Swinton represents the corporate client who is horrified to find such a man leading their defense.  A near-perfect example of the legal/business thriller, with the usual undercurrents of guilt and shame.  Written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who wrote all the “Bourne” pictures, but here he prefers a more classical visual and storytelling style that is relentless. (R) HHHH – RE

MR. WOODCOCK: Billy Bob Thornton in full “Bad Santa” mode in an uneasy comedy about an adult (Seann William Scott) who returns home to discover his mother (Susan Sarandon) is planning to marry the gym teacher (Thornton) who made his high school days a living hell.  Thornton makes no compromises and takes no prisoners when he plays Woodcock.  He’s a hateful jerk, and he means it.  That makes the movie better, actually, than if we sensed a heart of gold. NO END IN SIGHT: A documentary featuring devastating testimony from men and women who had top government or military jobs, had responsibility in Iraq or Washington, implemented policy, filed reports, labored faithfully in the service of U.S. foreign policy, and then left the government.  Some jumped, some were pushed.  They all feel disillusioned about the way the White House stubbornly refused to listen to their advice.  All the more powerful because they are not anti-war activists or sitting ducks for Michael Moore, but people who were important to the Bush administration. OUTSOURCED: A film bursting with affection for its characters and for India.  Josh Hamilton plays an American exec sent to India to train a telephone order-fulfillment center for his tacky novelty company (Wisconsin cheesehead hats a specialty).  The beautiful Ayesha Dharker plays an employee who is ahead of the learning curve; they generate amazing chemistry.  Not a great movie, but maybe couldn’t be this charming if it was.  There is a fundamental sweetness and innocence to it; leaves you feeling good. (PG-13) HHH – RE
The Grand Cinema: Thurs 2:30, 9:10.

RATATOUILLE: Disney and Pixar deliver a marvelous animated tale of friendship, following one’s dreams and the art of French haute cuisine.  The hero of the story is a tiny Parisian rat named Remy (voice by Patton Oswalt), who one day finds himself in the kitchen of one of the world’s greatest chefs, where he soon befriends the kitchen’s busboy Linguini (voice by Lou Romano).  The two form a unique bond that affords Remy the chance to indulge in his culinary artistry and Linguini the chance to make something of himself. STARDUST: A shooting star (Claire Danes) falls into a forbidden kingdom, and Charlie Cox enters the kingdom to get it for his love (Sienna Miller).  Also fighting for the star/woman: a wicked witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a dying king (Peter O’Toole).  Robert De Niro turns up as a cross-dressing pirate in an airship.  Cluttered and too busy; funny, not boring, but “The Princess Bride” it’s not. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE
Century Olympia: Thurs 12:50, 3:45.

SUPERBAD: Four-letter raunch-a-rama with a heart, and a fascination for other key organs.  Best friends Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) have been inseparable in high school, mainly because they were equally unpopular.  Now it is the last night of the high school year, bringing to mind the ancient truism that if you haven’t had sex yet and you don’t have it tonight, you will never have had sex in high school. TIM BURTON’S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN DISNEY DIGITAL 3D: Tim Burton’s holiday classic is re-released in “Disney Digital 3D.”  Normally, I’m pretty cynical about a Hollywood move like this. However, I must admit, even the network news is more exciting since I got my digital cable box.  This might be worth a look. (PG) – BW

WE OWN THE NIGHT: Joaquin Phoenix plays a Brooklyn nightclub manager who has changed his name to conceal his relationship with his father, the district police chief (Robert Duvall), and his brother, a top cop (Mark Wahlberg).  But now a war is starting between the cops and the Russian gangsters who own the club and control the drug trade.  Which side is Phoenix on?  Eva Mendes supplies an interesting dimension as a girlfriend who really loves and cares for him, and isn’t just another bimbo turncoat.  The material isn’t original, and the plot has some holes in it, but it’s atmospheric and well-acted.  Written and directed by James Gray (“Little Odessa,” “The Yards”).
