ARCTIC TALE: A fable in documentary style about the hard lives of polar bears and walruses in the Arctic. Using footage shot over 10 years but edited together to seem to be about the same animals, the film follows Nanu, a polar bear cub, and Seela, a newborn walrus. They live in a dangerous and harsh environment. More sentimental and contrived than “March of the Penguins,” but effective as family entertainment. Narrated by a folksy Queen Latifah. (G) HH – RE
The Grand Cinema: Thurs-Sun 2:20, 4:45, 6:45, 8:45. Also Sat-Sun noon. Mon-Wed 4:45, 6:45, 8:45. Thurs, Aug. 30 2:20, 4:45, 6:45, 8:45.
BALLS OF FURY: Opens Wednesday. (PG-13)
Yelm Cinemas @ Prairie Park: Wed-Thurs, Aug. 30 12:15, 2:30, 4:40, 6:50, 9.
BECOMING JANE: Fictionalized speculation about a great romance in Jane Austen’s 20th year. The would-be author (Anne Hathaway) meets a handsome lawyer (James McAvoy) and wonders, if he loses his allowance from his spiteful uncle, could she support them by her writing (mostly still unwritten)? Engaging love story in charming Britlit Land (actually Ireland), even if it’s mostly made up and has little to do with the real Jane. With Julie Walters, James Cromwell and Maggie Smith. THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM: Run, Jason, Run. The Bourne films have taken chases beyond a storytelling technique and made them into the story. This time Jason hurtles through London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris, Tangier and Turin in search of the identity the CIA took from him. Matt Damon plays a man who survives one impossible situation after another, in a superior action thriller that doesn’t much care who his enemies are, as long as he’s in a big hurry to find them or escape them. With Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney. (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE

DADDY DAY CAMP: Cuba Gooding Jr. steps into Eddie Murphy’s role in this misguided sequel to “Daddy Day Care,” and makes a film choice that demeans his obvious acting ability. The acting is atrocious, the jokes are stale and the storyline is predictable. (PG) H1/2 – BZ

DEATH AT A FUNERAL: British comedy involving unplanned entrances and exits, misbehavior of corpses and just plain wacky eccentricity. Directed by Frank Oz, it finds its laughs in the peculiar human trait of being most tempted to laugh when we’re absolutely not supposed to. With Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes, Ewen Bremner, Jane Asher, Rupert Graves and, last but not least, Peter Dinklage. (R) HHH – RE
The Grand Cinema: Thurs-Sun 2:30, 5:10, 7:10, 9:10. Also Sat-Sun 12:30. Mon-Wed 5:10, 7:10, 9:10. Thurs, Aug. 30 2:30, 5:10, 7:10, 9:10.

Regal South Hill Cinema 6: 12:50, 4:50, 7:40, 10:10.
HAIRSPRAY: Pure fun, from the moment a roly-poly teenager named Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) bounces out of bed and serenades the neighborhood with “Good Morning, Baltimore!” Circa 1962, she dreams of getting on the local TV teen dance show, but on her way there she gets indignant about how the show is all-white except for one day a month. Based on the 1988 movie and the 2002 Broadway musical; still fresh. With John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Christopher Walken. (PG) HHH1/2 – RE

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX: Harry is convinced the evil Voldemort has returned, but no one will heed his warning, and the Ministry of Magic cracks down, imposing a fearsome new teacher (Imelda Staunton) at Hogwarts. Her name is Umbridge, and she takes plenty. Harry and friends hatch a plot to defend Headmaster Dumbledore from her ravages, in a movie that is darker, more solemn, less whimsical than we expect in the series. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE
AMC Narrows Plaza 8: Thurs 1:20, 4:10, 7, 9:50. Fri & Sun 1:05, 4:10, 7:10, 10:10. Sat 10:15 a.m., 1:10, 4:10, 7:10, 10:10. Mon 1:20, 4:15, 7:20, 10:15. Tues 1:20, 4:15, 7:20.

Yelm Cinemas @ Prairie Park: Thurs 2:30, 9:25.
HOT ROD: “SNL” freshman Andy Samberg is perfectly cast as a young daredevil who dreams of fame. Something, however, always seems to go wrong with his stunts; he’s Evel Knievel on a moped, leading a life resembling an episode of “Jackass.” Surprisingly funny, because he’s shown as sincere but extremely misguided, rather than played broadly as a maniacal goofball. (PG-13) HHH – RE
Regal Martin Village 16: Thurs 10:10.
Regal South Hill Cinema 6: Thurs 7, 9:40.
ILLEGAL TENDER: See review page 23.
Lakewood Cinema 15: Fri-Tues 11:30 a.m., 2:10, 4:45, 7:30, 10:10.
I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY: Firefighter Kevin James saves his friend Adam Sandler from the collapse of a burning building, so Sandler grants his colleague “any favor.” Widower James decides that they should masquerade as domestic partners to ensure that James’ children will be entitled to his city benefits should he be killed in the line of duty. A funny premise turns into an uneven and choppy cinematic ride. The hearts of the filmmakers are in the right place; it’s a shame they didn’t try harder to make this funny. With Jessica Biel, Steve Buscemi and Dan Aykroyd. (PG-13) HH1/2 – BZ

THE INVASION: The fourth, and the least, of the movies made from Jack Finney’s classic science fiction novel “The Body Snatchers.” Here is a great story born to be creepy, and the movie churns through it like a road company production. If the first three movies served as parables for their times, this one keeps shooting off parable rockets that fizzle out. Nicole Kidman stars as a mom fighting off alien spores for herself and her son, Daniel Craig is her current squeeze, Jeremy Northam her ominous ex-husband, Jeffrey Wright the brilliant scientist who solves everything in two concise speeches, and Jackson Bond is Kidman’s young son. The actors do what they can with a plot that we concede must be implausible but does not necessarily have to upstage the Mad magazine version. (PG-13) HH – RE

NO RESERVATIONS: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart co-star as rival chefs; she hates him as a rival, but inevitably they’re drawn together, thanks partly to the matchmaking of her sister’s orphaned child (Abigail Breslin). Alas, the characters seem to feel more passion for food than for one another. Remake of the 2002 German film “Mostly Martha.” With Patricia Clarkson, Bob Balaban. Directed by Scott Hicks (“Shine”). (PG) HH – RE

OCEAN’S THIRTEEN: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and the usual sidekicks produce a baker’s dozen sequel that belongs in the day-old store. When Al Pacino cheats their pal Elliott Gould out of his casino, they team up to sabotage opening night with a lickety-split plot that includes such implausibilities as creating a fake earthquake with a 600-ton Eurotunnel boring machine. Good looking, however, and maybe fun if you don’t expect a real caper movie. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END: Director Gore Verbinski and the stunt and special effects crews have created one of the most impressive blends of live-action work and CGI wizardry ever put on film. Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley have poured so much talent and energy into their roles, I have to acknowledge that even though I haven’t been the biggest fan of the “Pirates” franchise, these characters have earned their iconic status. (PG-13) HHH – RR
Blue Mouse Theatre: Thurs 7.
RATATOUILLE: Disney and Pixar deliver a marvelous animated tale of friendship, following one’s dreams and the art of French haute cuisine. The hero of the story is a tiny Parisian rat named Remy (voice by Patton Oswalt), who one day finds himself in the kitchen of one of the world’s greatest chefs, where he soon befriends the kitchen’s busboy Linguini (voice by Lou Romano). The two form a unique bond that affords Remy the chance to indulge in his culinary artistry and Linguini the chance to make something of himself. The computer-animated visuals are stunning, the story is compelling, and the music will carry you away. The film is rated G, which stands for gloriously entertaining. Grownups will find this one irresistible. Oh yeah, the kiddies will like it, too. (G) HHH1/2 – MD

Blue Mouse: Sat night only 11:30.
RUSH HOUR 3: Chris Tucker is once again Carter, the motormouth LAPD cop who’s always in trouble, and Jackie Chan is once again Lee, the ace Hong Kong cop called in to partner with him. A case involving an ambassador’s shooting and secret documents from a Triad gang sends them to Paris, where of course it is necessary for them to defend their lives while hanging from the Eiffel Tower. Pretty much what you’d expect, but kinda fun. (PG-13) HH ¬– RE

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE: A feature-length adventure starring America’s most dysfunctional family, which succeeds in the nearly fatal pollution of Springfield.
