Bluesgrass comes to Sylvester Park
by Tony Engelhart
Jul 19, 2007

I’ve said it so many times you’re probably sick of hearing it, but I’ll say it again. The best country comes from outside the Nashville hit machine.

Case in point is Deadwood Revival.

The duo of Jason Mogi and Kim Trenerry evoke the spirit of Bill Monroe with rootsy acoustic country that is foot-stompingly authentic. With only clawhammer banjo and guitar, the Port Angeles-based pair pen tunes that could have easily been written in the 1900s. Mogi’s vocals are pleasantly inviting while Trenerry’s are comparable to Emmylou Harris, which gives them their ultra rich harmonies. Teetering between bluegrass and down-home country, they have caught the attention of Bluegrass Now magazine, which said, “They’re on the leading edge of the resurgence and revitalized interest in old-time music.”

The twosome released its self-titled debut in 2005. The 13-track compilation won many fans on CD Baby as it got back to the bare essentials of Americana music. Their follow-up, 2006’s The Old World, received similar treatment as Jason and Kim delivered another 12 tracks of western swing, bluegrass and acoustic country. With a nice mix of traditionals, covers and originals, the album is a must have for all alt country and bluegrass freaks.
